Site observation #1
Silverbell road. Grant road to Goret road improvements.

Project progress
Currently the overall project is about half way done. The biggest part of the project,
which is the construction of the five cell rectangular culvert, is almost complete. The
other part of the project is the widening of the existing roadway from a two lane to a
curbed four-lane divided roadway (2 lanes in each direction), to include a raised
median island, bike lanes, a sidewalk on the west side of Silverbell, a multi-use path
on the east side of Silverbell, drainage crossing improvements, LED street lighting,
signal improvements at the Grant and Goret intersections, bus stop improvements,
native landscape, retaining walls at the large slopes, and public art.
This should be completed later this year.

Construction activities
During my visit there were a couple of construction activities going on but
specifically the construction of the culverts.
The road from grant to gorett was still in the early stages of construction due to the
fact that most utilities are still being moved before any construction is started.

Equipment
Concrete pumping truck used for pumping concrete needed for the culvert
construction.
A toed sheepsfoot roller used as grading equipment is to bring the earthwork to the
desired shape and elevation.
A Forklift used to transport materials and debris from one place to another on the
site.
Hydraulic excavator used for digging up soil and rocks to allow for the construction
of the culvert.
Motor scrappers used for digging hauling and leveling out the road.

Labor
Most of the workers did more than one job. 6 workers doing woodwork on the
culvert and laying the concrete in between the steel bars.
One worker operating the concrete pump. 3 equipment operators making sure
water and other materials were in place and a foreman overseeing the whole
process.

Materials
The job site had a fenced prep area, which included a temporary office building and
all the equipment. I was able to see asphalt and concrete and other aggregates.

Safety and Traffic control

There was considerable amount of traffic control since road expansion involves a lot
of inconvenience for current users. Barricades were placed on road above the
culverts to avoid accidents. Vertical panels were also placed on the road to direct
traffic.
Stop signs were placed at the certain points on the road. Speed limit signs and fine
signs were also used to aid vehicle operators.
As for the workers, they all wore PPE equipment, which included a safety vest,
gloves, steel-toed shoes. For workers working in trenches specifically had steel
barricades on either side of the trench to avoid earth debris from falling over.
