Stem: Compare how well solids, liquids and gases conduct. Explain their relative conductivity in
molecular terms.

Sample Response:

Conduction is best in solids compared to liquids and gases. Because the molecules in solids are
closest together, energy can be easily transferred thru the bumping or colliding of molecules. In
liquids and gases, conduction is less because the molecules are farther apart therefore there will
be less collision between the molecules. Between the molecules of a gas, there is a lot of space
and the least amount of collisions.

Rubric:

1. Level 1 Description
Solids conduct energy best.

2. Level 2 Description
Solids are the most conductive. Liquids are more conductive than gases.

3. Level 3 Description
The order of the materials is correct and only collisions between the molecules of
the solid are described.
4. Level 4 Description
The order of the materials is correct and collisions between the molecules of the
solid, liquids and gases are described.

5. Level 5 Description

Humans are affected by the natural movement of heat on the planet. Give an example of how
this happens through each of the following mechanisms: conduction, convection and radiation.

Sample Response:
Conduction affects humans anytime something with heat touches something else and warms it
such as the way the warm waters of the Gulf Stream heat the air at northern latitudes to keep the
temperature warmer then it would be without the transfer of heat.

Convection moves the plates that make up the surface of the earth causing earthquakes and
volcanic eruptions.

Radiation is the form of heat that we receive from the sun. Without it the earth would be a cold
dead planet. The heat from the sun allows life to exist on earth

Rubric:
1. Correctly gives an example using conduction

2. Correctly gives an example using convection

3. Correctly gives an example using radiation
