ABSTRACT
This project was founded and created for graduating students of senior high school who

would take college entrance exam in their chosen university. The respondents of the study where

grade 12 students from STI College Santa Rosa. The researcher’s goal was to develop a portable,

and user-friendly mobile application for college entrance exam reviewer. The system is designed

to review and test the general knowledge of the grade 12 students.

The researchers used experimental design to determine if the mobile application would

meet the requirements of a college entrance exam reviewer and to test if the mobile application

would be usable.

This study describes using mobile application for entrance exam reviewer. Through the

formulation of the mobile application, the researchers are confident that the mobile application

reviewer can be usable, accessible, and most of all can serve as a training ground for test takers.

The results of the study were obtained through Likert scale that serves as the degree of

respondent’s to the researcher’s question. The total number of respondents were 109 Grade 12

students that are randomly selected. The researchers found out that the mobile app reviewer was

familiar to the students and the researchers must add a features that may distinguish itself from

other applications.

Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Background of the Study

To become a student in a prestigious school especially in college in the Philippines is a big

challenge for every graduating Senior High School student. Every year, many universities

implement a college entrance exam and almost thousands of students take a college entrance exam

on different universities. In fact, the University of the Philippines received over 103,000

applications to take its UP College Admission Test (UPCAT) on year 2017 (GMA Kapuso

Foundation, 2017). The students who graduated in a famous university have greater edge in many

job opportunities and this is the reason behind the perseverance of test takers to pass the college

entrance exam. College entrance exam is a test that determines the student’s collective knowledge

in various skill areas and it also measures the student’s potential to perform on his chosen

university. The student’s course when he was in high school will help him prepare for these exams.

According to Rieza (2012), there are many universities who implements an admission test

and these are University of the Philippines, University Santo Tomas, De La Salle University,

Ateneo De Manila University, Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Technical University of

the Philippines, University of the East, Far Eastern University, Pamantasan ng Lunsgod ng

Maynila, San Beda University, Adamson University, Mapua, and Lyceum. These universities have

different rules as well as different exam coverage. Hence, many students do not know how to start

preparing for college entrance exam in the first place. Since smartphones have been popular and

mostly used device in the world today, many developers have created various mobile applications

to address a problem, or to make easy transactions or operations. Smartphones have far greater

functionality than normal mobile phones due to their ability to run mobile apps. These applications

confer on smartphones the capabilities to send and receive e-mail, play music, movies, and video

games, and even communicate remotely with computers from virtually anywhere in the world

(Coustan & Strickland, n.d.). In relation to the study, there are various mobile application for

college entrance exam reviewer in the market such as Zookal reviewer application and AHEAD

reviewer application. Zookal Test Prep app is an online mobile application that digitizes reviewer

and learning material for students. The applications contain learning materials and test questions

for various types of examinations such as entrance test for colleges and universities; the National

Achievement Test, as well as licensure examinations for professionals, and those who wants to

work in the government. While AHEAD Reviewer App is an app available on Apple Store. It was

the digital version of AHEAD’s “Score Higher in UPCAT” review book. The application is not

free and can be accessed for 30-day trial. These reviewers have help the test takers in the

preparation for the examination.

The researchers were inspired to create a mobile application for college entrance exam

reviewer. The name of the application was “RevMe” and it stands for “Review Me”. The name

was made short and simple to make it easily to remember. It aimed towards students who want to

passed the college entrance exam but do not have resources and no idea about what will they take

on college entrance exam. The study was conducted in order to determine the usability of mobile

application reviewer in preparation for college entrance exam, and to provide learning materials

that can be accessed anywhere and anytime for free.

Conceptual Framework

The conceptual framework shows that in this study, the researchers will have the cause and

effect, meaning what will be the advantages and changes will happen if our app will be used or

downloaded. Another one is outcome, what will be the benefits after using our application. And

lastly, our goal.

If this will be created right away, the researchers can ensure that all students that will undergo

taking our application will achieve the goal they wanted to, lessen their time on browsing internet

looking for the most important details about the topics to exam, they don’t also need to borrow

other person’s books or notes, lessen also the spending of money and time gathering information.

Statement of the Problem

that are provided in the mobile app?

3. How does mobile application reviewer increase the speed of the students in

understanding the test questionnaires?

Research Hypothesis
The researchers believed that “RevMe: The Usability of Mobile Application Reviewer for

preparing for College Entrance Exam” will served as training ground and help the students in

the preparation for college entrance exam.

Significance of the Study


This study envisions the development of a Mobile Entrance Exam Reviewer Favored by

G12 STI College Santa Rosa. It is intended to have a high passing rate for the entrance examinee

at STI College Santa Rosa. One of its beneficiary would be the school, mobile Entrance Exam

Reviewer is a way of enhancing the school particularly in the field of examination process. It

guarantees a more productive and opportune entrance exam process for STI College Santa Rosa.

Next, the students as it encourages students to study at STI College Santa Rosa and it also gives

convenience since it is easier for the students to review for the entrance exam. Then the researchers

because it helps integrate certain processes gathered by the researchers to create solutions and

implement acquired knowledge for the STI College Santa Rosa entrance examination process.

Lastly, the future researchers because it provides relevant ideas, knowledge and information to the

future researchers in conducting related searches.

To the future researchers who have the same study like this, the study will serve as their

guide throughout their research especially to those who does not know where and how will they

start the study. This study will also help for the development of a mobile application for college

entrance exam because the study will serve as their basis in the mobile application.

Scope and Limitation/Delimitation

The proposed mobile application is portable to many students that they can bring anytime

and anywhere. It includes 3 core subjects that is common to many college entrance examinations,

these are English, Math, and Science. The researchers’ resources will come from an existing

entrance exam reviewer. Lastly, the proposed system will include practice test questionnaires in

every core subjects, this practice test questionnaire has a timer, and the application will

automatically count the score and recorded them on the database so that you’re able to know your

progress.

The proposed mobile application will not encompass online entrance exam reviewer. The

content of the mobile reviewer will remain as it is and can only be updated once the application

was also updated. Unlike a typical reviewer which includes answer key, this mobile application

will not include answer key to avoid cheating on practice test. The mobile application can only be

used on android phones. Lastly, the mobile application does not include information about current

events which are also taken on college entrance exams because it is an offline mobile application.

Definition of Terms
Application. An application is a software designed to operate on smart phones and computers

for certain use.

Entrance Examination. Conducted by an educational institution to select prospective students

for the admission.

Mobile Application. A mobile application is a software in cellphones.

Reviewer. A reviewer is notes that can guide students in exam.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

In the past decades, computers have been widely used in many industries, companies,

government units, hospitals, schools, and also used by many individuals. Computers have been a

big help to everyone for daily transactions and operations. The power of computer has changed

the world through the years that it can connects people to each other and makes life easier.

However, without a computer software, computer is useless, it cannot make life easier. To these

reasons, computer software was created.

A computer software is an application or program in a computer that is used for different

operations and transactions. These software has different usage and is created by computer

programmers. These programs are exclusive only for computers and cannot be installed or used to

other devices.

As the time passed by, technology has evolved and computers become more portable,

lightweight, and can fit into your pocket. These small computers are one of the very useful devices

nowadays, these are smartphones. Smartphones are gadgets that inherits the behavior of a

computer. It can save files and documents, has multimedia tools (music, camera, videos, and photo

gallery), can create word documents, presentations, photo editing, and video editing, can be used

in daily transaction and communications, and many other uses. Behind these functions were mobile

applications that powers smartphones to become a mini computer.

A mobile application or mobile app is a software application. Basically, it is a computer

generated program designed and developed to run are used in gaming, social media, multimedia,

and in education. Mobile applications are available in app store; users can buy it or install it for

free.

In this study, researchers would like to develop a mobile application that can help students

to prepare for college entrance examination. A college entrance exam is a standard aptitude test.

Aptitude tests measure your collective knowledge in various skill areas such as verbal, math,

analytical and writing skills. These tests are not designed to measure what you have learned in

school rather; they measure your potential to perform well in the future. Your high school courses

will help you prepare for these exams. Taking practice exams is an additional way to study for

these types of tests, as they will help you become familiar with the types of questions asked, the

format of the questions and the timing necessary to finish each section.

Universities who take college admission test varies on rules, and coverage on the exam.

According to Rieza (2012), most of the top universities in the Philippines includes Math, Science,

and English, while other universities such as University of the Philippines (UP), De La Salle

University (DLSU), and Ateneo De Manila University (ADMU) will include essay on the

examination. Other universities include both logical and abstract reasoning such as University of

Santo Tomas (UST), De La Salle University (DLSU), and Ateneo De Manila University (ADMU),

then others has general information like Ateneo De Manila University (ADMU) , Polytechnic

University of the Philippines (PUP), and Far Eastern University (FEU). In addition, the students

must have focused on language proficiency, reading comprehension, math and science.

Nowadays, various mobile applications for entrance exam reviewer have been created and

used by many people in the world. These mobile applications can either give them help or give

them fun in their daily lives. One of it is Zookal Test Prep app, with over 100 thousand downloads

in Google Playstore. Zookal is a Singapore-based education company founded by Australian

students in 2011. It is a mobile application that digitizes reviewer and learning material for

students. The app contains a database of over 20,000 practice multiple-choice questions designed

for various entrance tests for schools, colleges, and universities like the UPCAT; the National

Achievement Test, as well as licensure examinations for professionals, and those wanting to work

in government. The learning materials and quizzes can only be accessed online (Newsbytes PH,

2016).

Other mobile application for entrance exam reviewer have been launched in the app store

and this is AHEAD Reviewer App. The app is available on Apple Store and it cannot be used by

an android user. The AHEAD Reviewer App is a digital version of AHEAD’s “Score Higher in

UPCAT” review book, the country’s first review book for the UPCAT that was first published in

1998. The app was developed in recognition of the evolving educational needs of students and

their growing preference for digital learning tools. The AHEAD UPCAT Reviewer App consists

of practice questions focused on subject matters covered in the UPCAT: Language Proficiency,

Mathematics, Science, and Reading Comprehension. Not only will app users be able to improve

their test-taking skills, they will also get to increase their UPCAT knowledge. As with AHEAD’s

other pioneering review materials, the AHEAD UPCAT Reviewer App is the result of the

concerted efforts of the center’s best tutors, experienced educators, and top lecturers, making the

app fun, interactive, and effective. A free trial version of the app is available at the Apple Store for

those who want to do some brain exercises. To access the paid version, students have to buy ePINS

from authorized payment centers, including Load Central and selected AHEAD branches.

Some related studies about mobile application reviewer was a project named

"Development of an internet-based exam system for mobile environments and evaluation of its

usability" by Ekinci, Kose, and Tufeczi (2013), that aim to develop an electronic exam system

that students who are preparing for their exams are able to access from their own personal

computers or mobile devices, to evaluate the system developed and to determine its role and

success about educational objectives.

According to Ekinci H., et al (2013), the project is easily accessible by students from

computers and other mobile environments, and to carry out the usability tests of both mobile and

web- based modules of the exams prepared by using their system. The system developed within

the framework that provides the users with an electronic environment that can be used easily,

quickly and effectively. The overall objective of their system is to meet the demands of students

and teachers with regards to efficiency, practicality and effectiveness. The students can access the

software system by entering the user names and passwords. If a student is not registered in the

system, he can sign up by following some easy steps. Registration process is completed only when

an administrator confirms the registration made by students. Otherwise, student is not allowed to

access the system. When a student signs in the system by entering the necessary information, he

can see the list of exams and specifically the ones he can take. These exams can be seen only when

the exam is confirmed by the teacher. Later, the students can select the exam he wants to take and

click on “Enter to the Exam” and access the page displaying the information about the exam. Uses

two different software structures. In order access the system via mobile phones and mobile devices,

wireless internet technology is used while the mobile devices with Windows Mobile operating

system require additional software for the connection.

On the other hand, the proposed mobile application by the researchers is a reviewer for any

college entrance exam in the Philippines. It has many features that test the student to be ready in

entrance exam in his chosen university. The proposed mobile application contains information that

is crucial for preparing students to pass the college entrance exam. The mobile application reviewer

was based on the lessons on junior high school that are taken in any college entrance exam test in

the Philippines. It has also practice test example and a countdown timer that measures the

knowledge of the student and boost his speed on taking the test. Moreover, the researchers make

sure that the application can be accessed offline due to the reason that Philippine’s Internet

connection was so slow. According to the Akamai’s 4th quarter state of the internet report (2017),

Philippines ranked lowest among 15 Asia Pacific countries, and 108th in the world, with an internet

speed of 4.5 mbps. With this mobile application, they can be prepared for any college entrance

exam in the Philippines and have the chance to pass the exam without spending money, and can

be accessed anytime and anywhere.

Chapter 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Design

An experimental design, the researcher actively tries to change the situation,

circumstances, or experience of participants (manipulation), which may lead to a change in

behavior or outcomes for the participants of the study. The researcher randomly assigns

participants to different conditions, measures the variables of interest and tries to control for

confounding variables. Therefore, experiments are often highly fixed even before the data

collection starts.

The researchers use experimental research design and this encompass the following. -A

blueprint of the procedure that enables the researcher to test his hypothesis by reaching valid

conclusions about relationships between independent and dependent variables. It refers to the

conceptual framework within which the experiment is conducted. The researchers conducted a

Mobile Entrance Exam Reviewer aims to make learning more affordable and accessible to

graduating Grade 12 students who would take college entrance exam. The study intends to provide

students review materials that can easily accessed using their mobile phones to help them pass

their entrance examinations to universities like UPCAT, PUP. The practice test in the mobile

application is based on the questionnaires of a college entrance exam. These study are aimed at

instilling and healthy study habits to students so they can improve their study outcomes and

enhanced their learning experience.

Population

The population of this research mainly is the Grade 12 Students of STI College Santa Rosa;

they are divided into 23 sections with a total of 931 students. In order to obtain the total respondents

of the study, the researchers use Slovin’s formula. Through the formula, the researchers obtained

109 students as the total respondents. Lastly, to accumulate the total respondents per section, the

researchers multiplied the percentage of each section to the number of total respondents that were

obtained by using Slovin’s formula.

In addition, the students in Grade 12 of STI College Santa Rosa were considered

appropriate as population of the study area because, as stated in chapter one, they are the required

students to take our program. They are in the best position to furnish the research with the

information needed to answer the research questions of this study.

Sampling Method

The researchers used the Random Sampling a method of selecting a sample (Random

Sample) from a statistical population in such a way that every possible sample that could be

selected has a predetermined probability of being selected. The researchers used the Random

Sampling, a technique wherein a subset of a statistical population in which each member of the

subset has an equal probability of being chosen. The researchers’ respondents are Grade 12 ABM,

WEB, CA, TO and STEM students of STI College Santa Rosa and they are grouped according to

their Section through the use of Slovin’s formula.

All in all, the sampling processed is based on the requirements on the main problem of the

study. It helps the researchers to determine if the mobile application would be usable for the grade

12 students.

Data Collection Procedure


The first step that the researchers did was to gather information related to the research

problem. The researchers read various materials that may help in the development of this study.

We also come up with a survey questionnaire that is validated by our thesis adviser; these

questionnaires are divided into two categories: questionnaire about the mobile application, and

questionnaire that test the general knowledge of the students.

After the validation of the instrument, the researchers computed the sample population

from the total population using Slovin’s formula. After getting the sample population, the

researchers explained the purpose of the study to the selected respondents and then they made sure

each participant corresponds to their predefined criteria. The researchers collected the data by

means of survey questionnaire that comprises their name, age, strand and section. After, the

respondents have taken the survey; the papers were checked, tallied, interpreted and analyzed.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The data that are gathered from the respondents through survey questionnaires that was

tabulated, interpreted, and analyzed where made with the following statistical formula:

grade 12 ABM, WEB, CA, TO and STEM students.

Likert scale shows how to identify the possible outcomes of the verbal interpretation.
This is the scale where the verbal interpretation gathers the computed score of a specific
question.

Data Analysis

The researchers utilized random sampling in order to obtain unbiased results. Data that

were gathered will be encoded in excel spread sheets for automatic computation. The

computations are based on Slovin’s formula, which are essential in determining the total number

of respondents. In order to determine the usability of the mobile application, the researchers

prepared questionnaires that will answer the problems that the research is trying to solve. These

questions are answerable by strongly agree, agree, disagree, and strongly disagree (verbal

interpretations on Likert Scale). In able to know the result of the likert scale in each questions,

the researchers used the weighted mean.

Chapter 4

RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

Introduction

This chapter discusses the data analysis and findings from 109 survey questionnaires completed

by randomly selected Grade 12 students of STI College Santa Rosa. The purpose of this study is

to determine the usability of a mobile college entrance exam reviewer for the users. Through the

surveys answered by the respondent, the results will help the researchers in determining the

usability of the reviewer application.

Questionnaires were given to the Grade 12 graduating students who are possible to take college

entrance exam. The data that were gathered was tabulated and analyzed through Likert Scale.

Likert Scale are used to measure the degree of respondent’s answer to which they agree or disagree.

of STI College Santa Rosa. The answers of the respondents answers the problem of the study

The mean interval is 3.4. It shows that the respondents strongly agreed that they consider

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATION

Summary of Findings

The main aim of the study was to provide reviewers for Grade 12 students that will take

college entrance exams. The basic research question was formulated as follows: “How usable is

mobile college entrance exam reviewer?” The subsequent chapters examined, in other Countries,

they are used to browse through their phones to get information for certain questions: CHAPTER

ONE: This chapter outlined the background to the research problem, by stating the problem,

specifying the research objectives, and laying out the research approach. The proposed methods

and structure of the research were described. CHAPTER TWO provided a review of the research

literature relating to the cultural and historical background of the school populations being

considered, as well as schools that offers reviewers. This review was undertaken in order to

establish a theoretical understanding of and a basis for developing the research instruments used.

CHAPTER THREE reviewed, discussed and examined the rationale for the research design and

methodology. The sample area and delimiters of the study were described.931 students. And also,

deals with data presentation and the statistical analyses and interpretation of the results.

Major Findings of the Study

Findings based on the questionnaires completed by professors (quantitative data)

In STI College Santa Rosa, most of the variables that could have been

expected. A superficial but somewhat surprising finding was that Grade 12

professors agreed. But, instead, they want to try the application we want to create

so that they can really prove that it was helpful to students that may result to

passing grade on their Exams.

Findings based on interviews with school students (qualitative data)

Even taking into account the fact that much of the information obtained

from school students could be considered biased in one way or another, in 109

respondents have interesting that some of their comments confirmed the results

obtained from the professors aide, without the help of parents being aware of those

results. Students decided to acquire our application in order for their brain to have

some exercise, suggesting that these application can really be helpful among

taking exams. A exam with a reviewer would give a chance to students to enroll

in a school/university they want. With a better Grade, parents may decide to

improve our application so that their son/daughter will easily attain their plans in

life.

Conclusion

The proposed mobile application RevMe: Mobile Application Reviewer for College

Entrance Exam aims to help students who want to passed the college entrance exam but do not

have resources and no idea about what will they take on college entrance exam. The study was

conducted in order to determine the usability of mobile application reviewer in preparation for

college entrance exam, and to provide learning materials that can be accessed anywhere and

anytime for free.

The researchers ensure that all students that will undergo taking the application will achieve

the goal they wanted to, lessen their time on browsing internet looking for the most important

details about the topics to exam, they do not also need to borrow other person’s books or notes,

lessen also the spending of money and time gathering information. The application helped the

students to pass the exam with high grades.

and help the students in the preparation for college entrance exam.

Recommendation

Here are the following recommendations for the future researchers who wants to also

gather this research:

You can explore college entrance reviewer by adding new features and functions. There

are possibilities that can be achieved that can attract the students to use this reviewer and make it

reliable. This reviewer will help the students to boost knowledge about the questions of entrance

exam. College Entrance Exam Reviewer is very helpful especially to those students who wants to

take entrance exam. So many students are searching or find a better reviewer that will help them

in every subject such as English, math, science, verbal and non- verbal reasoning.

Always remember that the quality of application upgrade over time. To have a better

quality of reviewer, always prepare new features and functions to give satisfaction and give an

additional purpose to easily access and use the application. Also, always remember that the

reviewer must contain a time bounded information.

Lastly, upon the development of mobile application, the researchers recommended that the

programmers must have a backup files in case of problems that a mobile application can encounter.
