Objectives and Standards:
By the end of this workshop, teachers will understand

● what is embedded reading,


● how to use embedded reading in classrooms,
● how to create embedded reading materials
● use technologies to enhance/promote reading and comprehension in world language classroom.

What is Embedded Reading
● A way to help students to become better readers
● It is a series of reading (base, second, third and even fourth)
● Each version embedded with the previous reading
● The readings are scaffolded with old and new information
● A teacher adjusted reading to deepen students’ understanding

1. Base 3. One day, there is a lonely dog went to the
park because he wants to find a friend.
A dog goes to the park
He saw many ducks in the river and they
The dog saw many ducks
were swimming.
The duck swim away
The dog barks: “Hello, New friends”.
2. Second
Sadly, the ducks got scared of the dog, so
The dog goes to the park to find friends. they swam away.

He saw many ducks. The poor dog feels so lonely. He has no one.

He saw ducks were swimming. He walked to the playground and thought why
they did not want to be my friends?
He says “hello” to ducks, but they all swim away.

Oh, the poor dog, who will be his friend now?

Wrap up:
It is exciting to enhance reading and see growth of readers in our classrooms and
it is challenging to build the reading habit and create reading materials especially
for world language. You can use our flexibility and creativity to make adjust
materials just for our students. Embedded Reading is a fun and engaging activity
and the technologies can help us avoid problem of missing enough auditory input
and visual presentation of texts.
