2.2. RISK ANALYSIS

A specific risk analysis shall be conducted by the Cheminox using the relevant MSDS prior
to the execution of any work. This risk analysis shall include at least:
a) Toxicity
b) Potential risk of inflammation or violent reaction (agents used can be volatile
and/or flammable in air).
c) The compatibility of agents used with all materials, coming to contact

2.3. PROTECTION of the ENVIRONMENT

In the event of a leak or accidental discharge, the products must be immediately

recovered after having covered them with inert absorbing material, which shall be kept
in reserve in case of an emergency. If an emergency condition for discharge exists, all
potential sources of ignition shall be identified and removed, the surrounding area shall
be ventilated, and the personnel shall be evacuated. Only trained personnel wearing
suitable protective clothing and equipment shall be allowed to enter the area to take
control of the situation.
Effluents must be treated before disposal according to local regulation. Any acid or basic
solution shall be neutralized before disposal. Solvent containing less than 30% of
impurities may be recycled either in the company or by a supplier. Solvents that cannot
be recycled and sludge shall be incinerated in specialized centers. The exhaust gases
and smoke emitted during the incineration of halogenated solvent needs to be treated.
For any complementary information about disposal, recycle and solvents incineration,
the company shall consult competent local organizations.
Note: Disposal of any effluent is not allowed on the erection site.
Cheminox is in charge of safety measures and protection of the environment.

surfactants <1%, phosphoric acid 10-25%)
•

4. SCOPE

Cargo tanks acid pickling and passivation process will be performed on welded area and
rusty surface. (mechanical grinding must be done first)
5. WORK DEFINATIONS

5.1.Deagrasing

Organic contaminants such as grease, oil and paint, and also soil, grit, etc., have to
be removed. This can be done using the product Cheminox Cleaner (contains phosphoric
acid), which is sprayed onto the surface to be pickled using an acid-resistant pump. The
Cheminox Spray-Pickle Pump is recommended for this purpose. Cheminox Oxi Cleaner
provides a mild degreasing effect and is sufficiently effective in most cases. However,
heavily contaminated surfaces may require a stronger (non-chlorinated) solvent.
Cheminox Oxi Cleaner also removes surface rust and brightens the surface. After the
use, the surface must be rinsed with clean water. The use of a high-pressure water jet
supports rinsing and in some cases can also be an alternative to chemical products for
removing lightly attached grease, oils and chemical deposits.
The water-break test is a simple way of assessing the effectiveness of degreasing

5.2. Pickling

Stainless steel must have an intact, continuous oxide coat (passive coat) formed as far
as possible faultlessly on a metal surface in order that its corrosion resistance may
become effective.
The removal of foreign matter like reaction products (start-up paints, scale, slag
remnants), corrosion products (rust) or impurities (metal dust) from the surface;
Removal of the uppermost metal layer which contains lattice imperfections resulting
from mechanical processing (grinding, sawing, turning, etc.). The removal should be
done evenly and amount to 3 to 7 µm. Higher removals are undesirable and are
considered to be over-pickling.

5.2.1. Prior pickling

The least possible contamination of the surface can already be taken into account by
relevant measures during processing. In order to keep the pickling effort as low as
possible
- Processing of stainless steel should not be done in the same rooms in which also
unalloyed steel is being processed (iron dust, rust film);
- Prior to conducting work with heat impact (welding, annealing) dirt, grease and oil
have to be removed from the affected surfaces; Our process is not including oil but if
detected hard oil, oil must be cleaned with Oxi C.
- Tools and processing facilities are to be kept free of contamination by dirt, dust and
foremost by metallic impurities;
- Every contact with metallic materials of another kind has to be avoided;
- Welding splashes (welding beats) are to be removed immediately. In order to enable an
even impact of the pickling agent, sticking foreign matter should be removed by the
following procedures:
- Scale and still present welding remnants by mechanical procedure (brushing, etc.) or
by partial pre-pickling;
- Dirt, grease, paint remnants, etc. by steaming out and rinsing with degreasing
solutions (high pressure purifier).
- Ensure all tapes and plastics are removed before inspection to release for pickling and
passivation. If still detected tapes they must be cleaned with acetone.

5.2.2. Product Preparation

Effective pickling acids Antox 80 E In order to avoid corrosion damages (e.g. stress
corrosion cracking, crevice corrosion) pickling is to be done with pickling agent free of
hydrochloric acid and chloride. (sea water should not be used) For the preparation
water see 7.3

5.2.3. Spray Pickling

Spray pickling may be used as an alternative to pickling by immersion. It is suitable for
application to large areas both internal and external if they are accessible for spraying.
If applied properly the quality conforms to pickling by immersion. The process may be
used for all types of stainless steel. Prior to spray pickling ladder should be covered.
Spray pickling is only to be done by companies which are competent in this field and
which guarantee qualitatively unobjectionable pickling. Our sub-contractor is Cheminox
company.

5.2.3.1. Post Treatment (Rinsing)

The pickled surfaces are intensively rinsed with water with cargo tank clean system, if
possible using a high-pressure spraying device. The remaining scale will be removed by
the pressure. Rinsing is to be done until absolutely no acid is present (check with pH
paper and stop when the water have the same pH used for rinsing ) and particular
attention has to be paid to poorly accessible places. See 7.3 for water properties.

5.2.3.2. Inspection
The pickled surface is supposed to show to the naked eye a smooth as well as even
appearance. The surface must be completely free of start-up paints, scale, slag
remnants, rust and iron inclusions.

5.3. Passivation

Stainless steel must have an intact, continuous oxide passive layer formed on a metal
surface which is as far as possible faultless. If this passive layer is penetrated by
corrosion or mechanical action the material re-passivates by itself in an oxidising
environment with good conductivity (neutral to acid). In many cases it is more
advantageous to achieve passivating under controlled conditions in a faster and more
direct way. The purpose of this norm is to give instructions concerning corrosion
protection by passivating to the manufacturer but especially also to the operator of
equipment of stainless steel. The subsequently described process leads to an
- Increase of pitting resistance by removal of sulphide inclusions;
- Fast formation of an even, tight passive layer
5.3.1. Prior Pasivation
After acid pickling (Oxi S,) well washed surface should be checked visually. Ensure that
surface area removed from pickling materials.

5.3.2. Process
The best results are achieved with Antox 90 E, active for 20-30 minutes at 18-22C°.

5.3.3. Post Treatment (Rinsing)

After passivating the parts are to be thoroughly rinsed with water. Care has to be taken
that after rinsing no acid-containing water remains. This can be checked by indicator
paper (check with pH paper and stop when the water has the same pH used for rinsing).
See 7.3 for water properties.
