Certified Management Accountants do more than just measure value - they create it. As the
leaders in management accounting, CMAs actively apply a unique mix of financial expertise,
strategic insight, innovative thinking and a collaborative approach to help grow
successful businesses.

CMAs are a vital ingredient to business success. That’s because they bring the technical skills as

Your path to becoming a CMA 2010 – 2011
For workforce professionals

More than a designation

Becoming a CMA means more than obtaining an accounting

designation – it means success, a holistic skill set and a competitive
advantage that will take you to the next step in your career. It will help
you create a lifestyle that sets you up for personal and professional
success. But most importantly, it will teach you strategic management
skills that are needed in an increasingly competitive business
landscape, making you an ideal candidate for today’s top employers.

Create your own destination and open up endless opportunities for your
career — become a CMA.

Unlimited opportunity
As a CMA, your career potential is unlimited. You’ll have the
freedom and flexibility to choose:

• the employer you work for

• the industry you work in

• the career path you desire

• where you live and work

The corner office or the world

— it’s your choice
CMAs live and work around the globe. That’s because their
impact on business is becoming increasingly recognized as
an invaluable asset. Through mutual recognition agreements
and the growing influence of a global marketplace, CMAs
work in close to 100 international locations and are

Training that delivers a powerful competitive advantage

Other accounting professionals specialize in financial reporting, auditing or after-the-fact verification. CMAs are different
because they’re equipped to look to the future and provide real-world strategic direction, business management and
leadership. CMAs apply their creativity and technical skills to solve problems and develop strategies that help
businesses thrive.

The Strategic Leadership Program (SLP) is the hallmark of the CMA designation. Depending on your career stage and
experience, however, you may be eligible for one of CMA’s other professional programs. Each program is based on the
SLP and the three pillars of the CMA designation: strategy, management and accounting.

• Financial Reporting

You will also develop four enabling competencies. These

abilities often create the most effective senior executives
and are just as important as the technical skills. They are:

• Problem-Solving and Decision-Making

• Leadership and Group Dynamics

• Professionalism and Ethical Behaviour

• Communication

Practical experience requirement

Concurrent with the CMA training, you must achieve a minimum of 24 months of relevant, full-time or equivalent,
progressive practical experience. As a CMA candidate, you won’t have to article. Instead, you’ll have the opportunity to
gain real-world experience in industry while you complete your training. This integration of on-the-job experience and
education ensures you can apply management principles and operational knowledge in a real-world environment, thereby
honing your decision-making and leadership capabilities.
