Different genre’s comparisons

Ancestors (2018) Sci-fi short film

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6my5xiKVPKs

This short film is about how humans have “ruined” earth, several centuries
in the future, and an explorer visits his ancestral home world to find out
what happened to all the humans on Earth; this is shown throughout the
film with shots of the earth looking dead and dry. The genre of the short film
is sci fi, we can tell it is a sci fi due to the four micro aspects used in the
making and the different conventions used to show the genre of it. The
target audience of this short film would be again teens and younger teens,
as the whole topic of space interests some people and it helps people get interested in a certain
topic, such as science. People who watch sci fi movies are often interested in space and theories of
space, the short film also fits the Todorov’s theory as there was a disruption to the equilibrium,
when he found the bone in the ground, and the attempt of repairing the damage was when he put
the bone back into the ground as it belonged to a 36-month-old girl.

Sound:

Sound has been used in this short film to show off the genre of sci fi by
using non-diegetic sound, such as the voice over added in to the
movie over the actions he is performing, also the sounds of the wind
blowing. The environment has been used to help us as an audience
that the earth is “dead” as the sound of him walking on all the dead
grass and leaves shows that the earth is dry sand lifeless thanks to its
“ancestors”. This links to the genre of Sci-Fi because the environment
is often used to represent the genre. The narrative of the film is linear as it shows one point in time
but the actual video itself is non-linear as the shots are moved about to different locations to prove
the point of what he is speaking about. Such as the whole speaking about earth, but the video shows
us different areas like the bones and location is different compared to what the narrative is saying.
Another use of sound throughout the film is non diegetic sound. The use of this non diegetic sounds
is a piece of music which has been used from the start of the film all the way up until the end of the
film. The music is of a low tone and sounds sad, the reason that they have used this music
throughout is to keep a sad tone to film, this follows the film because the character us upset and
talking about how his ancestors ruined this world. The use of non-diegetic sound to add in music
and sound effects such as the ship moving is often seen in the Sci-Fi genre making this film
conventional to that genre.

Cinematography:

There are many wide shots used in this short film in order to show us as
an audience that the environment is dying due to human effects. Wide
shots are often used in Sci-Fi films to show the setting and environment.
The film is about how the Ancestors ruined earth; we can see that they
have by the use of longshots to show the dead ground, and trees. Also,
by making a “dust and sand” storm this shows that the effect humans had
on the earth was large. This makes the audience feel sympathy for the
man, as he has come to see earth for himself and instead of seeing the
amazing planet, he was expecting it to be really nice and beautiful but
instead he got a got a dried up dying one. We can see his emotion
towards this as close ups were used in many ways such as, his video
logs and when he is wondering the ground. Another shot that they use
frequently throughout the film is a 1st person shot of the main
character. In these scenes he is reporting what he has found / done throughout the day. By using a
1st person shot it enhances the viewing experience of the audience and makes them feel like they
are a part of the story. All of these shot types link to the Sci-Fi genre because they show off the
surrounding environment which is conventional to the Sci-Fi genre.

Editing:

Editing has been used in this short film by using lots of cuts to
show what the voice over is talking about, such as when he is
talking about the ship he is on it cuts to show that he is flying a
ship, this links to the convention of the genre as the ship shows us
it is a sci fi genre. The use of editing in the post production by
adding in a fake “dust and sand” storm, helps us to under and that
the earth is dying as the conditions on the planet have changed to
storms of sand and dust. This helps us understand the genre again
as sandstorms are normally in sci fi films as they bring the effect
of a change in climate that has affected the planet. Another
example of editing that they used throughout this short film is the
use of special effects. The reason that they have added these
special effects is to show that the main character is from the
future and has superior technology. The reason that they have
used special effects in this film is to show the audience that it is part of the Sci-Fi genre and the main
effect is holographic map which is very futuristic and conventional to the Sci-Fi genre.

Mise-en-scene:

There were many uses of props in this film such as, the ship and the
gadgets on the ship, the use of these props helps us to see that the
genre is sci fi, as they have space tech and on a space ship, which
links to the genre of sci fi. This has been used so that we as an
audience can see the genre and understand that the film is a sci fi
based film, we know this due to all the conventions used. Also, the
use of his space suit helps us see this as normally people wouldn’t
wear a suit to travel in but you need one in space for the space ship
to make you safe, so the use of costume helps us see that it is a sci fi
genre. Another prop that they use throughout the is the
“Regeneration chamber” the reason that they use this throughout
the film is to show that the earth has been ruined by his ‘Ancestors’
and he can not stay out I the atmosphere for too long before
becoming ill. This mise-en scene within this film links to the Sci-Fi genre the reason that we know
this as an audience is because they use a lot of futuristic things and this is often seen in the Sci-Fi
genre.
