Outline for Planning a Weekday Mass with Children:

Gather:
Welcome Good Morning!

We welcome you this morning to our liturgy celebrating forgiveness. We gather to

remember God’s mercy and love. Our God is a kind and merciful God, always
willing to forgive us.

God knows us as we are, our good points and our weak ones. God helps us to do
good but also forgives us when we aren’t so good. No matter what we have done,
God offers us the chance to try again.

One of the greatest things about being here at (name of school) is getting to be
friends with a lot of nice people. Sometimes, though, we do things that can hurt our
friendships with other people. We have to learn to say “I’m sorry” when we’ve done
wrong and learn to say “that’s O.K., I forgive you” when someone says that they are
sorry.

When Jesus worked miracles he also forgave the sins of people. Jesus tells us we
must forgive one another if we want God to forgive us. Let us all remember to
practice forgiveness when we have trouble with friends, teachers, and all others we
meet.

Please stand now and join us in singing our gathering song: “My Jesus, My Saviour”
Introductory Rites
Entrance Hymn My Jesus, My Saviour by Darlene Zschech

My Jesus, My Saviour
Lord there is none like you
All of my days, I want to praise
The wonders of Your mighty love

My comfort, my shelter
Tower of refuge and strength
Let every breath, all that I am
Never cease to worship You

Shout to the Lord, all the earth let us sing

Power and majesty, praise to the King!
Mountains bow down and the seas will roar
At the sound of your name
I sing for joy at the work of your hands
Forever I'll love you, forever I'll stand
Nothing compares to the promise I have in You

My Jesus, my Saviour
Lord, there is none like You
All of my days, I want to praise
The wonders of your mighty love
My comfort, my shelter
Tower of refuge and strength
Let every breath, all that I am
Never cease to worship You.

Reading/s This first reading is from the book of Colossians 3:12-13

As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion,
kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has
a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so
you also must forgive.

Gospel In the Gospel of Luke, Chapter 15, we hear the story of a young man who makes
many mistakes. He learns that when he admits his mistakes and says “I’m sorry,” he
is forgiven.

Luke 15:11-32
Jesus told this story, “There was once a man who had two sons. The younger said to
his father, ‘Father, I want right now what’s coming to me.’ So, the father divided the
property between them. It wasn’t long before the younger son packed his bags and
left for a distant country. There, undisciplined, he wasted everything he had. After he
had gone through all his money, there was a bad famine all through that country and
he began to hurt. He signed on with a citizen there who assigned him to his fields to
slop the pigs. He was so hungry he would have eaten the corncobs in the pig slop, but
no one would give him any. That brought him to his senses. He said, ‘All those
farmhands working for my father sit down to three meals a day, and here I am
starving to death. I’m going back to my father. I’ll say to him, Father, I’ve sinned
against God, I’ve sinned before you; I don’t deserve to be called your son. Take me
on as a hired hand.’ He got up and went home to his father.

When he was still a long way off, his father saw him. His heart pounding, he ran out,
embraced him, and kissed him. The son started his speech: “Father, I’ve sinned
against God, I’ve sinned before you; I don’t deserve to be called your son ever
again.’ But the father wasn’t listening. He was calling to the servants, “Quick. Bring
a clean set of clothes and dress him. Put the family ring on his finger and sandals on
his feet. Then get a grain-fed heifer and roast it. We’re going to feast! We’re going to
have a wonderful time! My son is here – given up for dead and now alive! Given up
for lost and now found!’ And they began to have a wonderful time.” The Word of the
Lord.

All: Praise to You, Lord, Jesus Christ.

Homily
Prayer of the Faithful 1. Jesus tells us that God is always ready to forgive and wants us to forgive,
too. So, we trust in God when we pray. Our response will be “Lord, teach us
how to forgive.”

2. Lord, may the leaders of nations and all peoples know that we are all created
by the same God who loves us all and wants us all to care and forgive one
another. We pray to the Lord. “Lord, teach us how to forgive.”

3. Lord, we pray for anyone who has hurt us, in our family or in school. Let us
pray to the Lord. “Lord, teach us how to forgive.”

4. Lord, we know that you always forgive us. Let us pray that we may always
forgive ourselves when we know we have done wrong. Let us pray to the
Lord. “Lord, teach us how to forgive.”

5. Lord, we pray for the sick of our Parish and for all our relatives who are ill.
Help them to feel your healing presence. Teach us to be comforters of each
other. We pray to the Lord. “Lord, teach us how to forgive.”

Recessional Hymn One Way by Jonathon Paul Douglass & Joel Timothy Houston

I lay my life down at your feet

'Cause you're the only one I need
I turn to You and You are always there

In troubled times, it's You I seek

I put You first, that's all I need
I humble all I am all to You

One way, Jesus, You're the only one that I could live for
One way, Jesus, You're the only one that I could live for

You are always, always there

Everyhow and everywhere
Your grace abounds so deeply within me
You will never, ever change
Yesterday, today the same
Forever till forever meets no end

One way, Jesus, You're the only one that I could live for
One way, Jesus, You're the only one that I could live for
One way, Jesus, You're the only one that I could live for
One way, Jesus, You're the only one that I could live for

You are the way, the truth and the life

I live by faith and not by sight for You
We're livin' all for You
You are the way, the truth and the life
I live by faith and not by sight for You
We're livin' all for You
You are the way, the truth and the life
We live by faith and not by sight for You
We're livin' all for You
You are the way, the truth and the life
We live by faith and not by sight for You
We're livin' all for You
