SYNOPSIS
Introduction
In our 'luest to usc more renewable energy to reduce our dependence on non renewable
fuds man has been harnessing wind, solar and hydro energy for many years. \¥hilc hydro
and solar energy arc well established, it is only during the last decade that serious
progress in wind energy has been made. Solar energy is widely used for water or space
heating while wind is used for pumping watcr for remote areas. This proj ect looks into
the design and development of a (; kW wind powered water heatill!:>; unit.

The wind powered water heating system is powered by a 6 kW permanent magnet wind
generator, The generator produces three phase AC voltage which is rectified and fed into
~ DC to DC buck converter. Heater bars are placed at the output of the huck converter to
heal waler. Voltage and current LEMs are u<ed to tnt:asure the output voltage and output
current whilst a temperature probe is used to measure the heat sink temperature. A square
wave, signal representing generator speed is derived from the output voltage of the wind
turbine. Th~se signals are fed into a DSP through an interface card. From the above
inputs, the DSP calculates the necessary power flow in order to obtain maximum averagc

This chapter d~als with the t~sting of the heater controller, probl ems encountered and

For testing purposes, the wind generator ,>"as mounted on a test bench and coupled to a
DC machine through a gearbox. The speed of the DC machine is controlled by using a

DC drive. The DC machine and the DC drive were used to emlliate the wind tumine.
Controlling the speed of th e DC machine meant that the frequency of rotation of the wind

turbine could be changed and therefore the output power from the wind generator altered.
of
The wind generator and the IX: motor were coupled through a gearbox to match the high
speed of rotation of the dc machine to the low speed of rotation of the wind generator.

_1_ Voltages surges Immunily improvement (in red)
It is a ST r..commendalion (ftg 22 of datasheetj to improve the immunity to large input voltage surges
As" possible improvement, the idea of the proposed additioni!ll drcllitry around COMP pin (in blue) is,
The COMP rwn C<ln be used to cancel the output. When the COMP voltage goes below O.5V the shut-
down <J the circuit occurs, with a zero duly cycle lor the power Mosfet
With the proposed circuit (not tested, to be checked) ,
When VDD pin Voill reach +/-5V, n Voill pull COMP down to ground, c"nceling tI,e output.
When the DC bus will reacl1 +1- 35V, T2 will open n, enab~ng Viper starting.
