Jesus Gives Life to a Dead Girl and Heals a Sick

Woman [Matthew 9:18-26]
18
While Jesus was still talking, a leader of the synagogue came to him. The leader bowed
down before him and said, “My daughter has just died. But if you will come and touch her
with your hand, she will live again.”
19
So Jesus and his followers went with the man.
20
On the way, there was a woman who had been bleeding for twelve years. She came close
behind Jesus and touched the bottom of his coat. 21 She was thinking, “If I can touch his
coat, I will be healed.”
22
Jesus turned and saw the woman. He said, “Be happy, dear woman. You are made well
because you believed.” Then the woman was healed.
23
Jesus continued going with the Jewish leader and went into the leader’s house. He saw
people there who make music for funerals. And he saw a crowd of people crying
loudly. 24 Jesus said, “Go away. The girl is not dead. She is only sleeping.” But the people
laughed at him. 25 After the people were put out of the house, Jesus went into the girl’s
room. He held the girl’s hand, and the girl stood up.26 The news about this spread all around
the area.

MARY, MOTHER OF GOD

(based on Luke 1:26-38)

Part 1: The Annunciation

YOU WILL NEED:

 A purple cloth
 Mary figure
 Angel figure
 An empty crib
(Figures from Nativity Set
could be used)

Carry materials carefully to the circle and place beside you. Begin by rolling the purple cloth in front of you and
saying:
Purple is the colour for getting ready. It is the colour of Advent. Advent is a time for getting
ready. It is a time of waiting for a most amazing event.

Place the empty crib on the left hand side of the cloth as you say …
The season of Advent is the time we get ready to celebrate the mystery of Christmas.

During Advent we remember some of the special people who helped God’s promise to come true.
Let’s listen to the story of one of these people.

Place Mary onto the material.

Mary was a girl from Nazareth. She lived a good life and loved God very much.

Place angel figure onto material near Mary.

One day, Mary had a most unusual visitor. It was the angel Gabriel who came with a very special
message from God.

Turn Gabriel to face Mary.

Gabriel said “Rejoice, the Lord is with you.” The angel told Mary she was to be the mother of
God’s own son. Her baby would be called ‘Jesus’.

Move Mary back just slightly as you say …

Mary was at first amazed and afraid. “How can this be?” she asked.

Move Gabriel close to Mary and hold your hand over Mary in the sign of blessing as you say …
Gabriel replied, ‘Do not be afraid, the Holy Spirit will come upon you and God will be with you.”

Mary said ‘Yes’ to God’s messenger, Gabriel.

Move the angel away.

Mary was frightened, but happy. She was surprised, but blessed.

Move Mary close to the empty crib.

From that time on Mary began to get ready to be the mother of God’s son.
Godly Play Scripts - 45

Pause and sit with the story for a while before engaging the students with some ‘I wonder’ statements:
 I wonder why God chose Mary to be the Mother of Jesus
 I wonder how Mary felt when she saw Gabriel
 I wonder how Mary felt about being the Mother of Jesus

Carefully pack story materials into storage box and put on shelf. Ensure that children are watching so they know
how to pack the materials away and where to find them.

St Peter
St Peter was one of the Twelve Apostles. He became the first pope.

Before Peter decided to follow Jesus, he was a fisherman from Bethsaida near
the Lake of Galilee. He was the son of Jonah and had a brother called
Andrew.

After Jesus’ death and resurrection, the Apostles were in hiding for they were
afraid of the Jewish leaders who had killed Jesus. Peter had even denied three
times that he knew his friend Jesus.

However, at Pentecost, the Apostles were filled with the special strength of
the Holy Spirit. Peter and the other Apostles courageously began teaching
people about Jesus. Despite persecution and being put into prison, Peter
continued to preach the Good News of Jesus to the early Christians.

Besides visiting people, Peter is believed to have written two letters (called
epistles) to other Christians to encourage them to continue believing in Jesus.

Finally Peter went to Rome, becoming Bishop of Rome. The Roman emperor
Nero disliked Christians and decided to kill them.

Peter was arrested and sentenced to death by crucifixion. Peter did not
consider himself worthy to die as Jesus died and asked to be crucified
upside down.

The feast of Saints Peter and Paul is celebrated on June 29th.

St Paul
(based on the Book of Acts)

St Paul, whose Jewish name was Saul, was born in Tarsus. Before becoming a
Christian, Saul persecuted some of the early Christians (people who believed
in Jesus). Saul was present when the first Christian martyr, Stephen, was
stoned to death.

On his way to a place called Damascus to arrest and persecute Christians, Saul
had an experience which completely changed his life.

As he was travelling, a bright light shone all around him and he fell to the
ground. Then he heard a voice say, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’

‘Who are you, Lord?’ asked Saul.

‘I am Jesus, the one you are persecuting,’ said the voice.

Saul found that he could not see. He was led to Damascus. For three days he
remained without sight.

Saul knew this experience to be a call to teach to people about Jesus. Saul
received the Holy Spirit through a Christian leader in Damascus called
Ananias. It was at this time that Saul changed his name to Paul. Paul then
spent the next 30 years travelling to many places and bravely teaching about
Jesus. He also wrote many letters (epistles) to these communities encouraging
them to continue to believe in Jesus.

Around the year AD58 he returned to Jerusalem where he was placed in

prison. He was then sent to Rome where he was put to death by the Romans.

The feast of Saints Peter and Paul is celebrated on June 29th.

Shout out with joy, all the earth,

And praise God’s Holy Name ev’ry day.
Come singing songs of joy
As we gather in the presence of God … today!

We come with thankful hearts,

We enter God’s house with praise.
We are the people that God has made,
Give thanks and bless God’s name! (Chorus)

Our God is always good,

Everlasting is God’s love.
Faithful ‘til the end of time,
Give thanks and bless God’s name!

Shout out with joy, all the earth,

And praise God’s holy name ev’ry day.
Come singing songs of joy
As we gather in the presence of God…
Shout out with joy, all the earth,
And praise God’s holy name ev’ry day.
Come singing songs of joy
As we gather in the presence of God … today!
