Competency 001: The teacher understands human development processes and applies this knowledge to

plan instruction and ongoing assessment that motivate students and are responsive to their developmental
characteristics and needs.

My take on Competency 001: To me this means that a teacher must be able to understand their students as
people. Every student has their own way of learning and a teacher must understand how to educate that
particular child in the necessary materials. A teacher must understand how to motivate their students and
promote their learning in a positive and prosperous way.

Competency 002: The teacher understands student diversity and knows how to plan learning experiences
and design assessments that are responsive to differences among students and that promote all students’
learning.

My take on Competency 002: This means that a teacher must able to know or understand that every
student is on a different level and must be tested accordingly. Teachers must form their own assessments
in a way that stimulates every students mind and encourages their learning. Teachers have to find a way
to take a class of diverse and unique students and educate them all.

Competency 003: The teacher understands procedures for designing effective and coherent instruction
and assessment based on appropriate learning goals and objectives.

My take on Competency 003: Teachers must teach what is required and understand what methods they
are permitted to use. They must learn the rules and requirements for their material, what procedures are
most effective, and what is the most organized and proficient method of teaching.They must also know
what goals they need to reach for their school year.

Competency 004: The teacher understands learning processes and factors that impact student learning
and demonstrates this knowledge by planning effective, engaging instruction and appropriate
assessments.

My take on Competency 004: Teachers must understand how their students learn and what factors
contribute to their learning process. This means they must learn what assessments are appropriate to use
when testing and they must plan their lessons effectively. They also must find engaging methods to use
when teaching.
Competency 005: The teacher knows how to establish a classroom climate that fosters learning, equity
and excellence and uses this knowledge to create a physical and emotional environment that is safe and
productive.

My take on Competency 005: A classroom must be a positive learning environment. Because of this
teachers must learn to create a safe physical and emotional environment so that students can have the best
possible chance at learning. A teacher must learn to create the best possible classroom learning
environment that they are capable of.

Competency 006: The teacher understands strategies for creating an organized and productive learning
environment and for managing student behavior.

My take on Competency 006: Managing a classroom is not easy. Because of this teachers learn strategies
and classroom management techniques that they can employ in their classrooms. These techniques help to
keep classrooms organized and provide a productive learning environment.

Competency 007:
The teacher understands and applies principles and strategies for communicating effectively in varied
teaching and learning contexts.

My take on Competency 007: Teachers must learn to communicate with their students in a way that they
understand and can comprehend. All students need to be able to understand what their teacher is trying to
teach them and how it applies to them. If students do not understand what they their teacher is trying to
teach they will not be able to learn it.

Competency 008: The teacher provides appropriate instruction that actively engages students in the
learning process.

My take on Competency 008: Instructions are very important. Teachers must learn how to effectively
make up instructions that their students can comprehend. Students need to be able to understand the
instructions of any assessments or assignments they are required to complete.

Competency 009: The teacher incorporates the effective use of technology to plan, organize, deliver and
evaluate instruction for all students.
My take on Competency 009: Technology is very important in education. Technology can be used by
teachers to open up new ways of learning for their students. If a teacher uses their technology correctly
they can improve their students learning incredibly.

Competency 010: The teacher monitors student performance and achievement; provides students with
timely, high-quality feedback; and responds flexibly to promote learning for all students.

My take on Competency 010: Teachers need to monitor and keep a record of student progress. Keeping
up with their acheivements and recognizing them will help to further their abilities and make the students
want to acheive more. Teachers must be flexible and understand that they need to keep students updated
on feedback and their academic progress. As all of this will help to encourage student learning.

Competency 011: The teacher understands the importance of family involvement in children’s education
and knows how to interact and communicate effectively with families.

My take on Competency 011: Teachers must include family members in students education, as this will
help further and improve their learning. Family support can help keep students motivated and encourage
them in academics. By communicating with the students families a teacher can assure that their students
are trying their best on their school work.

Competency 012: The teacher enhances professional knowledge and skills by effectively interacting with
other members of the educational community and participating in various types of professional activities.

My take on Competency 012: As a teacher you must be able to communicate with other professionals.
Teachers who communicate with their peers and coworkers have a better chance of finding effective and
unique methods and/or techniques for teaching. By participating in different training programs teachers
can widen their horizons and and become better at their jobs.

Competency 013: The teacher understands and adheres to legal and ethical requirements for educators
and is knowledgeable of the structure of education in Texas.

My take on Competency 013: Ethics are a big part of teaching. Because of this teachers must learn what
methods are ethical and legal to use in the state of Texas, they must also learn the structure of the Texas
education sysytem. Following the legal requirements and ethical requirements of the state will allow you
to become a better teacher.
