● In class, we discussed how this film was one of the great breaking out film for Brazil/Latin
America. We also discussed how the film was shot in a certain area of Brazil. Also, the style of
the filming is gritty, which of course is for the whole effect of the film. It also gives an inside into
the lives of Brazilian youths.
● In this review, it delved into the terms of what this film would be called. (Favelas) It gives gripping
key details and subtle notes that weren’t promptly picked up when viewing the film. The article
also goes into how the film related much to the Brazilian way of life in the slums. The article also
sums up how the Director gave a great feeling of storytelling when viewing this film.
● This article related to the film greatly because it pointed out some of its great strengths with also
highlighting some of the things that would fly under the radar or just simply not understood by
some. It gave a great unbiased review of the content the film hosted and meant to society today.
4) Write a critical analysis of the film, including your personal opinion, formed as a result of the screening,
class discussions, text material, and the article.
● City of God is a great coming of age film and humbles the audience it shines its light on. It gives a
realistic depiction of the reality of many youth in Brazil. An interesting quote that stood out to me
was: “Never before have criminals looked so young & pre-pubescent,” This quote goes into what I
was saying in my last paragraph of how the youth had to fend for themselves in the slums.
