Air-con systems tutorials

1. An air-conditioned room is to be maintained at 18oC, percentage saturation 40%. The

fabric heat gains are 3000 W and there are a maximum of 20 people in the room at
any time. Neglecting all other heat gains or losses calculate the required volume flow
rate of air to be supplied to the room and its percentage saturation when the air
supply temperature is 10oC. (Sensible heat gains per person = 100 W; latent heat
gains per person = 30W; barometric pressure = 1.01325 bar)

2. Air at 1oC dry bulb and 80% percentage saturation mixes adiabatically with air at
18oC dry bulb, 40% percentage saturation, in ratio of 1 to 3 by volume. Calculate the
temperature and percentage saturation of the mixture. Take the barometric pressure
at 1.01325 bar.

3. An air-conditioning plant is designed to maintain a room at a condition of 20oC dry

bulb and specific humidity 0.0079 when the outside condition is 30oC dry bulb and
40% percentage saturation and the corresponding heat gains are 18000 W (sensible)
and 3600 (latent). The supply air contains one-third outside air by mass and the
supply temperature is to be 15oC dry bulb. The plant consists of a mixing chamber for
fresh and recirculated air, an air washer with chilled spray water with an efficiency of
80%, an after heater battery and supply fan. Neglecting temperature changes in fan
and ducting, calculate:
a. The mass flow rat of supply air necessary;
b. The specific humidity of the supply air;
c. The cooling duty of the washer;
d. The heating duty of the after heater
(use the psychrometric chart assuming the barometric pressure is 1.001325 bar)

4. The plant of question (3) is modified for winter use by using pumped circulation in the
washer as in Figure below. The summer room design conditions of 20oC and specific
humidity 0.0079 are to be maintained when the outside conditions are 0oC and 100%
saturation; the ratio of fresh air to recirculated air is to be the same as in summer,
and the mass flow rate of air is also the same. The sensible heat loss is 14400W.
Taking the washer efficiency as 80% as before, and neglecting temperature changes
in the fan and ducting, calculate
a. The temperature of the air supplied to the room;
b. The heat supplied in the heater
5. It is required to maintain the air in a building at 20oC and 40% saturation when the
outside conditions are 28oC, 50% saturation with a barometric pressure of 1.01325
bar. The total heat gains to the room (sensible plus latent) are 15 kW, and the latent
heat gains are 3 kW. There is no reciculation and the fresh air passes over a cooling
coil to dehumidify it, and then a heater, before entering the room. The cooling coil by
pass factor is 0.2; the volume flow of fresh air is 5 m3/s, calculate:
a. The temperature of the air leaving the cooling coil;
b. The refrigeration load for the coil;
c. The heat supplied in the heater
d. If the air-con system is to be adapted for use in winter with the same room
conditions of 20oC and 40% saturation. The mass flow rate of dry air from
the heater is to be kept the same as in summer. The outside conditions are
-5oC, 100% saturation, and the sensible heat loss from the conditioned
space is 34.5 kW with the same latent heat gain of 3 kW. A saving in
energy is obtained by reciculating a portion of the room air using a mixing
box and dispensing with the washer. Calculate
i. The ratio of room air to fresh air that must be used for the system to
operate satisfactory;
ii. The heat supplied in the heater under these conditions.
