Lyrics

[Verse 1: Calum]
I love the light in your eyes and the dark in your heart
You love our permanent chase and the bite of our bark
We know we're classic together like Egyptian gold
We love us
[Pre-Chorus: Luke]
It don't matter, be combative or be sweet cherry pie
It don't matter just as long as I get all you tonight
[Chorus: Luke, Michael & Calum]
I can take you out, oh-oh
We can kill some time, stay home
Throw balloons, teddy bears and the chocolate eclairs await
Got nothing but love for you, fall more in love every day
Valentine, valentine
[Verse 2: Michael]
So deep, your DNA's being messed with my touch
Can't beat us
So real, fueling the fire until we combust
Can't touch us
[Pre-Chorus: Luke]
It don't matter, be combative or sweet cherry pie
It don't matter just as long as I get all you tonight
[Chorus: Luke, Michael & Calum]
I can take you out, oh-oh
We can kill some time, stay home
Throw balloons, teddy bears and the chocolate eclairs await
Got nothing but love for you, fall more in love every day
Valentine, valentine
[Bridge: Luke]
Full plate, don't wait, have your cake and eat it, too
Full plate, don't wait, have your cake and eat it
[Chorus: Luke, Michael & Calum]
I can take you out, oh-oh
We can kill some time, stay home
Throw balloons, teddy bears and the chocolate eclairs await
Got nothing but love for you, fall more in love every day
Valentine, valentine
Valentine, valentine
Lyrics explained

From their Cocktail Chats (episode 2):

Michael: Alright, “Valentine” to me is kinda like, the ultimate Valentine’s Day song. It’s like
our version of “All I Want for Christmas.” I feel like no one has made the perfect Valentine’s
Day song.
When you listen to it, it kinda encapsulates what the type of mood and feeling you wanna be
feeling on Valentine’s Day is.

Ashton: In the song, there are samples which we’ve played around with a lot in the past. That
was actually influenced by bands like The Offspring and people like that who would chop up
small samples of drum sounds and create loops, and that’s what the verses would be based
off. And then you would come in with bigger sounding live drums and the choruses. And
that’s what we did on “Valentine.”
Lyrically, it’s about a lazy love that feels free. It’s a love that meets in the middle and there’s
no expectations.

Calum: We were writing with Mike Elizondo, he was Dr. Dre’s bassist. I really loved his
workplace and his style of working with others, he had a lot of respect for people and was
very open to ideas.
Him being a bassist, naturally, I was like, “I gotta come up with a great bassline that beats all
his other Dre basslines.”

Luke: I remember Calum has a stanky bassline and he was being a bit shy about it, I
remember. For me, “Valentine” was about that Valentine’s Day should be every day.
That’s where the lyric comes from, “Throw the balloons and the teddy bears and chocolate
eclairs away. I got nothing but love for you, fall more in love every day.”

Ashton: “Valentine” was on Valentine’s day and we walked in and we’re laughing about, “Oh
imagine how many people are writing songs about Valentines Day today,” and we’re like,
“Let’s just do a good one.” And I voiced my frustrations about Valentines day and I think we
all agreed, it was a high intensity kind of, just a one day kind of Christmas but for
relationships, but I was like, “You should feel like this every day and it should be like that
every day.” It’s that cheesy thought that growing more and more in love with someone was
something that was happening to one or two of us at the time I guess. That’s where the song
came from”
