Topic:

The use of the present perfect tense

The topic of the club will be the present perfect tense. In the club, the class is going to be

about the present perfect tense, focusing mostly in the uses of the tense, the structure, and in

the application of differents words that complement it. In the first place, the uses are going to

be explained using a time line in order to get a better comprehension by students, then the

structures, and finally some examples; through the course of the explanations, the use of the

words: for, since and ever are going to be indicated and applied.

Uses:

We can use the present perfect tense in order to express two differents thoughts:

1) We can use it when we want to express a life experience that we had or didn’t have.

In this case we want to focus in the life experience and we don’t want to give

importance to the time in which the experience occurred, therefore in the sentence we

don´t mention the time. So, the life experience must to be:

 Something that happened at an unspecific/unimportant point in time.

 More important than the time when it happened

2) We can use it when we want to talk about an action that started in the past and

continues to the present, or the effect of an action that started in the past and continues

to the present. In this point we often use the words: “for” and “since”, in order to give

extra information about the duration of the action or how long it continue. For is used

to specify the duration of the action, and since is used to express a point in time where

an action started
How to make a statemetn with the present perfect tense:

We use the following structures:

Positive form: Subject + have/has + past participle verb + complement

Negative form: Subject + have/has + not or never + past participle verb + complement

Interrogative form: Have/has + subject + (ever) + past participle verb + complement +

question mark

Examples:

I have lived in Ecuador for seventeen years

She has not visited Quito with her Friends

I have taken the last test five times

Have they won the soccer championship?

He has obtained repeats by Mr. Mario since 2018

We have been in the club many time

Have you ever traveled to another country?

They have never missed an english class

The present perfect is one of the most difficult tenses for the students. It has a set of things

that make it very complicated to learn, among these are: a variety of very specific rules, a

large grouping of past participle verbs, new adverbs that have their own rules, besides of the

multiple forms in which you can use the present perfect tense. The student normally needs to

practice a great deal of time in order to use the present perfect in the correct way without

errors.

On the other hand, the English book of the program teaches to the students the present perfect

tense in a general way but not specifically. The book doesn’t teach the uses of the tense and

the adverbs that in most of the cases we need to use, it only gives us the grammar and a list of

the basic participle verbs. In spite of in the lessons, the teacher presents the present perfect

tense more deeply, the students necessitate practice more the tense in order to get used to it

because of the level of difficulty that represents to them.

The students, for those reasons, should have the possibility to access to clubs that the

program offers in which they could understand, learn, and use deeply everything that

encompasses the present perfect tense which includes all of previously mentioned. The

present perfect tense is really important, like the other times, because with it you have the

possibility to express a huge amount of ideas and thoughts that will allow you to establish

beneficial relationships with English speakers around the world, therefore its correct use is

crucial when you want to imply what you think to the people.

In conclusion, the students need to practice more the present perfect tense due to its high

difficulty and the lack of information in the program’s book and in the classes in which it’s

taught, so it is proposed the implementation of the club that aims to teach the present perfect

more specifically and clearly so that the student has the ability to use it at any time without

any error that may cause communication problems.
