Whereas prior to national independence one's affiliation including
one's dialect in the Middle East was related to an urban center such
as Jerusalem, Beirut, Aleppo, Bagdad, etc. - masr and is-sam
referring to semantic 'halos', to the countries of 'Egypt' and 'Syria'
respectively, rather than to the capital cities 'Cairo' and 'Damascus'
proper - the large bulk being the 'culturally denigrated' fallUhTn and
Bedouins, the emergence of political entities, whether independent
or mandatory, changed one's affiliation to one's nationality or country
of domicile. This explains Denizeau's title being a modern version
of Barth6lemy's title of dictionary.
Jerusalem, a universally historical center of monotheistic religions
and world civilizations, of perpetually political unrest and turmoil,
has been as far as its 'indigenous' colloquial Arabic is concerned,
under the impact of various foreign substrata and strata of lexical
elements, of Hebrew, Aramaic, Syriac, Persian, Latin, Greek, Spanish,
Venetian (Italian), Turkish, French, and English. Peoples of various
religious affiliations have during the ages migrated to the holy city,
intermingled with, and wholly or partially been assimilated with its
inhabitants linguistically, indirectly influencing its perpetually mutable
colloquial Arabic, whose lexicon is far from being monolithic. On
the other hand, 'Jerusalem Arabic' speakers have from time to time
emigrated from the city whether individually or in groups under the
impact of security, economic, or other factors, transfering their
spoken language.
During thirty years of British mandatory regime in Palestine
(1918-1948), a hoard of Turkish lexical items had been gradually
replaced by Arabic ones, and few English items found their way to
the local dialect. Since then and under the impact of accelerated
acculturation and westernization, propagation of education, higher
standards of living, communication, science, and technology, and wit
the aid of mass media, oral literary Arabic has, with a blending with
the local Jerusalem dialect, transformed Jerusalem Arabic, inter alia
replacing gradually many foreign lexical items, into 'Standard Jeru-
salem Arabic' thus allowing space for a category of 'Sub-standard
Jerusalem Arabic' spoken generally by Jews, by non-indigenous
inhabitants of the city, and by illiterate Arabs, who have not been
under the impact of oral literary Arabic due to the lack of formal
