2. Finding Networks and Access Points

is a collection of AP’s with the
same name (SSID).)
• Use the left and right arrows to
scroll the display for more

3. Drill in on an AP

• Use the Arrow Keys to select a


network
• Press SELECT to see a list of AP’s
on that network
– If the AP is not named, then its
manufacturer’s name and MAC
address is displayed
– If you’re looking at a small office or
home network, there will probably be
only one AP per network.

• Press SELECT again to see details


of the selected AP

4. Locate an AP

• Press Locate (F2) for a real time


graph of the AP’s signal strength
• As you move closer to or further
from the AP, you will see the signal
strength change
– Note that measurements are
expressed in negative dBm, which
means that a signal of -30dBm is
stronger than one of -40dBm

5. Setting an AP’s Authorization Status (ACL)


• The Access Control List (ACL) lets you
tag AP’s so that you can quickly identify
ones that that should not be there.
– You may have to scroll left to see the
ACL indication on the AP screen
• This can only be done from the Access
Points screen when accessed from the
main screen
• Press the Home key to return to
the main screen
• Use the arrow keys to highlight Access
Points and press SELECT
• Scroll to the desired AP and then press
ACL (F2)
• Choose the proper authorization status
for that AP and then press SELECT

6. Channel Usage and Interference

• AirCheck can scan all Wi-Fi channels for


AP’s, traffic, and interference
• Press the Home key, then select
Channels and press SELECT
• Press Legend (F2) for an explanation of
this screen •Not much interference
– Interference shows up as gray bars
– You can generate interference with a
microwave oven (be sure to put something
such as a cup of water in it before starting
it) or a Bluetooth device – it will show up
on the display
• A Bluetooth device needs to be in search/discover
mode to generate significant interference.

• Press AP List (F1) for a list of AP’s on a


selected channel

7. Discover Clients

• You can also discover all the


clients devices (typically PC’s or
smartphones) that are in an area
• Return to the main screen by
pressing the Home key
• Select Tools
• Select List Clients to see a list of
clients in the area
• Press SELECT again to see details
of the selected client

9. Connecting to a Network
• You can connect to an open network, or a
secured network of you have a security
profile set up.
– Sections 11 and 12 detail how to use
AirCheck Manager software to set up a
profile.
• You can connect to a network or a specific
AP from a number of different screens by
pressing Connect (F1).
• For this example, press the Home key, then
select the desired network and press
Connect (F1)
• AirCheck’s connection test includes three
parts, as noted on the screen:
– Establish connection with AP
– Obtain IP address with DHCP
– Ping Gateway and DHCP Server

10. Testing Signal Quality

• When connected to a network, you can


run a continuous signal quality test by
pressing Start Tests (F1)
• From here you can choose to PING the
gateway, DHCP server or enter another
address. Choose the gateway and
press SELECT
• AirCheck will ping continuously and
display the connection quality in a real-
time graph.
• Move around your area and see how
the connection quality is affected.

11. Using AirCheck Manager Software

• The AirCheck Manager software is required for two main


functions
1. Loading security and encryption profile information into
AirCheck
2. Creating Session Reports from information that AirCheck
has collected

• The first step is to install the ACM software on your


computer. Follow the directions included on the ACM
software CD.
• You will also need a USB cable to connect AirCheck to
your PC

12. Implementing Security Profiles

• AirCheck Supports All Common Wi-Fi Security Standards


• AirCheck Stores Network Security Information in “Profiles”
that Can be Loaded and Modified Only with ACM
• There are three steps to Enabling a Profile in AirCheck
1. Create the Profile with the Security Information
2. Transfer the Profile to AirCheck
3. Load the Profile in AirCheck

• Start the ACM Program


• Connect AirCheck to your PC with the USB cable

• In the ACM menu bar,
click on Tools, then
Profile Manager
• In the Profile Manager
window, select New

• Click ADD to add a new


SSID
• Use the tabs to enter the
following:
– IP Configuration
• Automatic is the correct choice
95% of the time – all else can
be left blank
– Security
• This needs to match your AP
configuration

• Click on File, then


Save As… to name and
save your profile.

Transfer the Profile to AirCheck
• Make sure your new Profile
is Highlighted
• Click on the
Transfer to AirCheck
button
• The new Profile will show
up in “AirCheck Profiles”

Load the Profile in AirCheck
• From the Home Menu, Select
Tools, then Manage Files
• Select Load Profile
• Scroll down to the desired
Profile and then press Load
• The currently active profile is
displayed in the upper right
corner of the main menu
screen

• When you are done evaluating


AirCheck, you can remove your
Profile by using Tools / Manage
Files / Delete File

13. Save an AirCheck Session


• Press the Save button
• Select Save to save
AirCheck’s current session
data
• Connect AirCheck to your
PC with the USB cable
• Start AirCheck Manager
software
• Notice that ACM now shows
your saved session

14. Generate a Session Report

• Press the Report icon to


open the Report Generator
• Select the type of report you
want: Summary or Detailed
• Press the Generate button
to create your report
