Q1) The force has a magnitude of 5ooN.

Express F as a vector in terms of unit vectors i and

j. Identify the x and y scalar components of F.

Ans.

Given that the magnitude of the force is 500N.

CASE 1:

According to the given figure, we can see that the angle made by the vector with the positive
x-axis, when measured in clockwise direction is 320degrees.

Then the component of force F along the x-axis will be,

cos 320 = 𝐹𝑥 /𝐹,

𝐹𝑥 = cos 320 ∗ 𝐹,

= 383.022

≈ 383.

Similarly component of force along y-axis will be,

sin 320 = 𝐹𝑦 /𝐹,

𝐹𝑦 = 𝑠𝑖𝑛320 ∗ 𝐹,

= −321.393

≈ −321.

CASE 2:

If the angle made by the vector with the positive x-axis, when measured in anti-clockwise
direction, then the angle is -40degrees.

Then the component of force F along the x-axis will be,

cos( −40) = 𝐹𝑥 /𝐹,

𝐹𝑥 = cos(−40) ∗ 𝐹,

= 383.022

≈ 383.

Similarly component of force along the y-axis will be,

sin(−40) = 𝐹𝑦 /𝐹,

𝐹𝑦 = sin(−40) ∗ 𝐹,

= −321.393 ≈ −321.
Since any vector can be represented in the form of its horizontal and vertical components.

Therefore the force ‘F’ can also be represented in the form of its horizontal and vertical
components as,

𝐅 = 𝟑𝟖𝟑𝐢 − 𝟑𝟐𝟏𝐣

Q46) The three concurrent forces acting on the screw eye produce a resultant force 𝑭𝑹 =
𝟐
𝟎. If 𝑭𝟐 = (𝟑)𝑭𝟏 and 𝑭𝟏 is to 90degrees from 𝑭𝟐 as shown. Determine the required
magnitude of 𝑭𝟑 expressed in terms of 𝑭𝟏 and angle∅.
2
Ans: Given that 𝐹2 = (3)𝐹1 , and is also given that 𝐹1 and 𝐹2 are perpendicular to each
other.

Using parallelogram law of vectors, we get the resultant of 𝐹1 and 𝐹2 as 𝐹12 ,which is equal
√13
to 𝐹12 = ( ) 𝐹1 ,
3

Since for the given condition to be satisfied, i.e., 𝐹𝑅 = 0, resultant of 𝐹1 and 𝐹2 , must be
collinear with 𝐹3 ,but in opposite direction to 𝐹3 ,

√13
Therefore, 𝐹12 = ( 3
) 𝐹1 , [Using law of collinear forces]

2
Since it is given that 𝐹2 = (3)𝐹1 , angle between 𝐹1 and the resultant of the two forces will
be , 33.69degrees.

Then angle between 𝐹2 and resultant 𝐹12 will be,

(90degrees-33.69degrees)=56.31degree

Then angle between 𝐹2 and negative y-axis will be 60degrees.

Since the resultant 𝐹12 and 𝐹3 will be in opposite direction, i.e., 180degrees.

Therefore,

56.31degrees+60degrees+∅degrees= 180degrees.

∅ = 63.69Degrees.
