I always knew that I wanted to be a teacher. It was something that I was so passionate about. I

assumed that teaching would consist of Reading, Writing and Arithmetic, Art, Music. Never in

my wildest imagination did I think about individuals with disabilities such as visual, hearing,

deafness, and mobility impairments. And then there are individuals that have chronic illnesses

like ALS, MS, MD, AIDS, and Cancer. Then there is a category for individuals with specific

learning disabilities such as Autism, Dyslexia, Language Processing Disorders, Non-verbal,

ADD, ADHD. This seemed a bit overwhelming to me because I had never thought of becoming

a teacher and facing any of these special needs students in a class that I was teaching. Special

Population had never been a thought for me.

Special Population Philosophy of Education

It is my personal belief that Educators will never know how to properly teach students

with any disability, chronic illness, or impairment unless we have personal, hands on experience.

All the literature that we read and TEDTalk videos we watch will never fully prepare us.

I have personally had experiences with some, not all of the disabilities, impairments and

chronic issues but I am so excited to take this task on.

Every child deserves the right to an education whether they have a disability or not.

Students with special needs have the capability to function, grow, learn and even succeed in life

if given the chance to flourish from childhood to adulthood. It takes a very willing teacher and a

love of the job and students, to take and accept this responsibility.

Every student has their own strengths and weaknesses. Students have their very own way

of thinking and learning. What works for one may not work for others. We have to focus on what

and where the student’s strengths are, building on that foundation so we can help in creating a

very strong individual. One that is ready to take on the world and do what they set out to

accomplish.

We need more special education teachers. There simply is not enough of us. It is my

belief that mainstreaming is not the best fit for all students with disabilities. This is where the

special education teachers are a benefit. Sometimes a special needs student may require more

attention on a particular subject and this will tend to distract the other students and can cause

frustration to the other students.

The students that I am focusing on teaching will be those with an Autism Spectrum

Disorder. I have been involved for the past eleven years with a special child that is on the

spectrum and learn new things from him each and every day. I want to be the voice for those that

do not speak. I want to be the one that makes a difference in the lives of future students. I want to

see them succeed. I want them to love themselves for who they are.
