This lesson plan is for a 1st grade class learning English vocabulary related to toys. The 50 minute lesson consists of 7 activities: 1) A warm-up activity where students brainstorm toy names and ask each other questions. 2) Listening to a song to identify toys. 3) Listening and singing the song to practice pronunciation. 4) A matching exercise to connect words and pictures. 5) A stress breaker activity where students sing and use gestures. 6) A spelling game to practice writing words. 7) Writing a letter to Santa describing favorite toys. Aims : by the end of the lesson students will be able to:
- pronounce correctly the vocabulary related to toys (doll, ball, train, plane, teddy, car); - associate images with English words; - write the words by themselves; - sing the song “I’ve got a plane”.
Aids: textbook, whiteboard, speakers, phone
Skills: Speaking / Listening / Reading / Writing. Organization: individual work, pair work, group work Techniques : brainstorming, question-answer, eliciting, listening for the gist, spelling game, song, matching. Approach: Communicative
ACTIVITY 1:warm-up and lead-in
Aims: - to get SS involved in the topic - to brainstorm and revise any previous acquired vocabulary for toys. - to simulate real life communication
PROCEDURE INTERACTION TIMING
T enters the class, greets the students and reminds Sts that it’s nearly Christmas and they have to send their letters to T-Ss, Santa. Teacher tells Sts that they are going to learn to write Sts-Sts the names of some toys in English, and use them in a letter to 10min Santa at the end of the lesson. Teacher brainstorms names of toys in English that the students know from previous years and then she asks them about their favourite toys. As a follow-up, Sts take over the role of the Teacher and ask one another questions about their favourite toys( What’s your favourite toy?/ A teddy bear!) . ACTIVITY 2: listening for the gist Aims: - to listen to a song to identify specific details( the toys they hear in it) – ex. 1page 34
PROCEDURE INTERACTION TIMING
T plays a song and Sts have to listen to it and circle the toys T-Sts they hear in the song. Sts work individually and afterwards Sts-Sts they share their answers with the whole class. 5 min T makes appreciations and checks Sts’ pronunciation. T supervises /supplies error correction if necessary.
ACTIVITY 3: listening and singing
Aims: - to pronounce correctly the vocabulary related to toys (doll, ball, train, plane, teddy, car); - to learn to sing the song “I’ve got a plane”.
PROCEDURE INTERACTION TIMING
Teacher asks Sts to repeat the lines of the song and then to T-Sts sing as the song plays. Sts sing the song twice and Teacher stops the song at various point to check for correct 5 min pronunciation. T supervises /supplies error correction.
ACTIVITY 4: matching exercise
Aim: to associate pictures of toys to their corresponding words PROCEDURE INTERACTION TIMING Sts do exercise 2 page 43and match the words to the pictures in pairs and then check their answers with the whole T-Ss class PW 5 min Teacher walks around the classroom to help Sts to complete the task.
Activity 5: Stress breaker
Aim : to help Sts acquire the new vocabulary in a fun and relaxing manner
PROCEDURE INTERACTION TIMING
Sts come in front of the classroom and sing the song . They T-Ss are divided into two teams, boys and girls and they use Sts-Sts 5 min gestures associated to the words in the song.
Activity 6: Spelling game
Aim: to practice writing the new words by themselves
PROCEDURE INTERACTION TIMING
On the whiteboard Teacher writes some letters that form T-Ss the new words and the Sts come and fill in the missing 10 min letters. Activity 7: practice of writing –Santa’s letter and feedback
PROCEDURE INTERACTION TIMING
T tells Sts that they are now ready to write their letter to Santa. Thus, after closing their books, they receive a foam teddy bear to write on their favourite toys. T-Ss At the end of the writing activity Teacher sticks the teddy PW 10 min bears on the window and awards smiley faces to the Sts that cooperated well during the activity as cooperation at this age is a difficult goal to achieve because Sts are often reluctant to communicate with each other.
