Policy Statement

I, Smt. V. Sathyabama, an All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazagham Parliamentarian

from Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu; come in to this special All India Party Meet as a minister of the
ruling NDA alliance with an intention to express the viewpoints of the people of the
constituency that I represent on the topics of freedom of speech and censorship.
As a committed parliamentarian, I agree to the importance of Freedom of Speech and
Expression in the Republic of India. Each and every citizen has the right to express their
views and opinion and no one should be restrained from the same. It is the fundamental right
provided by the Constitution of India.
Also, I oppose to the allegations that the government and its bodies are trying to restrain the
citizens of Republic of India from their fundamental right of freedom of speech. The
government is working according to the Laws of the land and do not hold power to go
beyond of it.
All of us know the diversity of India. India has the highest diversity of people on the basis of
religions and cultures. Whenever any case arises the government and its bodies need to make
sure that no group of people become the culprits of these cases. Thus, government has to take
various measures to ensure that no group of people are being exploited by any other group(s).
The measures taken by the government may seem to restrain the fundamental rights but that’s
not the case. These measures are taken as per the laws of the land. All the legal tools that are
used by the government to protect the rights of each and every citizen of India.
Currently nation has many legal and legislative frameworks to ensure the protection of rights
of each and every citizens of India. These may include Cinematograph Act of 1952,
Information Technology Act, 2000 (as amended 2015), Indian Penal Code and Code of
Criminal Procedure.

Also adding to it is the presence of Vigilante watchdog institutions like CBFC. At this
juncture I also request all party members to aim at strengthening these institutions and pass
an effective Lok Pal bill at the earliest.
