INSTRUCTIONAL PROJECT 4: LESSON PLAN

Date: 03.04.2019

Teacher Name: Sevda Erdas

Lesson Plan Type: Direct Instruction Lesson Plan

Grade: 7, Algebra 1

Lesson: Direct and Inverse Proportion

Content Area: Mathematics-Algebra

Time Allocation: 90 min-1 day

TEKS Objectives :(4) Proportionality. The student applies mathematical

process standards to represent and solve problems involving proportional
relationships. The student is expected to:
(A) Represent constant rates of change in mathematical and real-world problems
given pictorial, tabular, verbal, numeric, graphical, and algebraic representations,
including d = rt;
(B) Calculate unit rates from rates in mathematical and real-world problems;
(C) Determine the constant of proportionality (k = y/x) within mathematical and
real-world problems.

Lesson Objectives: By the end of the lesson the students should be able to
A. Understand the terms direct proportion and inverse proportion
B. Workout whether two quantities are directly or inversely proportional
C. Solve problems on direct and inverse proportion
D. Draw and interpret graphical representation of direct and inverse
proportion

Prerequisite Knowledge: The students can determine the changes of the

quantities but they have not learn we classify them as direct and inverse
proportion.

Teacher Materials: Smart Board, Juice, Pens, Pencil cases, Handouts for Group
Activity

Student Materials: Pearson New General Mathematics for Junior Secondary

Introduction

 Set Induction/Anticipatory Set

The teacher brings packet of fruit juice according to the number of students and
pen and pencil case with some amount of money to the class. First of all she
gives the juice to the students and asks to read the calorie table on it. They find
out there is 260 cal in 450 ml of juice. Then she asks them “what if the packet
holds 100 ml of juice, what is the calorie that you are going to take ?”. She wants
the to discover direct proportion and the answer is

450 ml 260 cal

x=57.78 cal
100 ml x cal
After getting the answer from them the teacher shows them $50 and tell them “
she can buy 10 pen each cost $5 and how many pencil case can she buy if each
cost $10 ?” The teacher wants them to realize the inverse proportion and then
she gets the answer from them.

$5 each 10 item
x= 5 items
$10 each x item

 Specific Content to be taught

The teacher’s first activity is related to the direct proportion and the second
activity is related to the inverse proportion.

In the lesson the teacher defines the direct proportion and inverse proportion.
She explains the difference between them and shows them on graph and apply
them on real-life examples.

It is also good to ask from students to give their own examples. It makes the topic
more clear for them whenever they are able to give example from particular topic.

Instructional Activities and Procedures

Teacher shows the following video for building up students’ understanding

Mannel’s Maths Music- Direct & Inverse Proportion

https://youtu.be/6RHesLvEG8A
A. Guided Problem Solving

Direct Variation

Inverse Variation
B. Lecture-Recitation

Use the questions below to help build students’ understanding by guiding

them through and questioning them.

1. Decide whether the relation is direct or inverse ?

Time(h) 1 2 3 4 5 6

Distance 5 10 15 20 25 30
(km)

2. Decide whether the relation is direct or inverse ?

Speed (km/h) 10 20 25 50

Time(h) 10 5 4 2

3. If y varies directly as x, and x = 12 when y = 9, what is the equation that

describes this direct variation?
4. If y varies directly as x, and y = 15 when x = 10, then what is y when x =
6?
5. If y varies inversely as x, and y = 6 when x = 4/3, write an equation
describing this inverse variation.
6. Suppose that y varies inversely as x2 and that y = 10 when x = 5/2.
a) Find the equation connecting x and y .
b) Find the value of y when x = 3

C. Discussion
 How do you recognize direct variation from a table?
It increases or decreases by the same factor
 How do you recognize direct variation from a graph ?
The graph looks like a straight line graph
 How do you recognize direct variation from an equation?
y/x is always constant
 How do you recognize inverse variation from a table?
It doesn’t increase or decrease by the same fashion
 How do you recognize inverse variation from a graph?
The graph looks like a curve
 How do you recognize inverse variation from an equation?
yx is constant

D. Cooperative Learning
Students work together in mixed-ability groups on task to complete the given
handouts.
Differentiating Instruction

Some students will easily complete the introductory activity while others will
struggle or be slow to start their work. At this case, hand out the following activity
to those students and expect them to finish before the class ends .
When we see that some students still need more explanation, the teacher goes
closer and solve for them some particular questions to make the topic clear for
them.
Example 1: p and q are directly proportional. When q is 7, p is 28.
a) Find the constant of proportionality, k.
b) Write an equation linking p and q.

c) When q is 3, find p.

Solution :
p∝q therefore p kq
a) 28=k*7, k=7
b) p=7q
c) p=7*3=21

Example 2: The time to paint a fence is inversely proportional to the number of

painters. Two painters (p), take 8 hours (t).

a) Find the constant of proportionality, k

b) Write an equation linking p and t.

c) How long would 3 painters take to paint the fence?

Solution:
1
t∝ 𝑝 therefore t=k/p

a) 8=k/2, k=16
b) t=16/p
1
c) t=16/3 = 5 3 hours

Evaluation

While the teacher evaluating the class she repeats the equations for both direct
and inverse proportion and gives the student quiz to see that everything is clear.

DIRECT PROPORTION INVERSE PROPORTION

y varies directly as x y varies inversely as x

y is directly proportional to x y is inversely proportional to x

y = kx for some nonzero constant k y = k/x for some nonzero constant k.
