Health Lesson Plan:

Allergy First Aid

Prepared by Karley Norton

Overview:
Part of the grade 6 health curriculum is to learn about misuse and abuse of materials. The first
part if this unit is to discuss allergies and how to respect those with sensitivities and severe
allergies. We will discuss common allergies and how allergies affect people. Students can share
their own experiences with allergies if they wish. We will also be looking at allergy first aid and
what to do if someone is having an allergic reaction. Finally, we will look at Anaphylaxis and
how to use an epipen.

Outcomes:
“Demonstrate knowledge and respect for people with sensitivities or allergies.”

Materials:
EpiPen powerpoint.

Lesson: 45 Minutes.

1.) Students will come into class and sit down. Have the powerpoint ready before they come
in. Have a class discussion about what an allergy is and have a student read the
definition off of the SmartBoard. (5 Minutes).

2.) Watch the video in the powerpoint that explains what an allergy is. Have a brief
discussion about the video. Allow students to share their experiences and knowledge
about allergies if they wish to. (6 Minutes).

3.) Have a discussion about Anaphylaxis and explain to the students how serious it is. Read
the definition of the board and have a discussion with the students about what this kind
of allergy means for someone. Discuss the signs and symptoms and explain how we can
help prevent these reactions and how we can help someone who is having one of these
reactions. (5 Minutes).

4.) Watch EpiPen video (Stop at ~2 Minutes).

5.) Discuss the use of EpiPens with the students. “Blue to the sky, orange to the thigh.”
Rule. Remind them that they must call 911 as soon as someone administers the EpiPen.
Tell them that the person who owns the EpiPen must have their hand on the EpiPen too
as they inject it. (4 Minutes).
6.) Watch the Sweet Caroline Foundation video.(11 Minutes).
7.) The viewing of this video will allow students to answer the following questions:
Allow students to answer two questions in groups:
“How can we raise awareness about allergies around our school?
“What is something you learned today that surprised you?
“How can we prevent someone from having an allergic reaction?
“True or False: You do not need to call 911 after using an EpiPen.” (10 Minutes).

8.) Wrap up and answer any questions the students may have. (5 Minutes).
