#10-Coffle:

Definition- used to describe a group of animals and prisoners or enslaved people

chained together in a line commonly used by slavers in the 18th century.

This image depicts a group of slaves

chained together between rich, white
landowners. They are in a line, which
is defined as a coffle. This is
something that slaves were put into
as a way of keeping them in one
place. This method was cruel and
unfair, as shown in the picture, as
was much that slaves faced during
those times. Emma Schmitz, P-2
#22- Estate:
Definition- traditionally a large area of land, used for agriculture, centred on a large
house, owned by one person or family.
This image is a picture of an estate.
It is a large house that is surrounded
by a large amount of yard, usually
used for agriculture. These are the
places that slaves would be forced to
work in unreal amounts. One person
or family would own a big house and
enslave black people to work the
ground without pay.

#16- Discriminate:
Definition-to treat unfairly favourably or unfavourably, especially on the basis of race or
gender.
Discrimination is something that, sadly, still
occurs to this day. It occurs mostly against
people of minorities, such as blacks in this time
period. When discrimination occurs, people are
cast out, such as the image here. Or, people
are just treated unfairly. Both of these are good
instances of discrimination that occurs to this
day. Discrimination is a part of racism, because
it is the unfair treatment of people who are
different from you.

#26- Genocide:
Definition-the planned or ordered killing of a racial or cultural group.

Genocide is something that has occurred a

few times throughout the history of the
world. It is a sad reality that occurred to
minorities. It is just one hardship of being in
the minority. It is a reality that many had to
face, all because people of different cultures
or races couldn’t just get along. In the
picture, a minority waits to be killed in a
concentration camp because of their skin
color or cultural group.
