Lesson Plan: PowerPoint Presentation on a Famous Athlete (90 minutes)

Topic: Many athletes have overcome adversity, let’s learn about how these greats turned a difficult

situation into a success story!

General Goals: 1) Inspire students to realize that with hard work and dedication they too can overcome

great obstacles.

2) Help students learn how to successfully research a topic, in this case an athlete.

3) Teach students how to present information using technology.

Specific Objectives: Show students how to conduct research and then organize and present it using

Microsoft PowerPoint.

Required Materials: Computer for each student with Microsoft PowerPoint installed on it.

Anticipatory Set: “Often we see famous athletes as naturally talented people who have everything they

want and need. However, some of the greats overcame massive struggles to get where they are. You will

have the opportunity to choose an athlete who overcame a struggle and educate the class on this topic!

Step-By-Step Procedures:

1) Begin by having a class discussion about adversity and what it means to face an obstacle. Allow

students to discuss in small groups various struggles they have had to overcome in order to accomplish

some goal. Then have a few students share their stories with the entire class. (5 minutes)

2) I will then discuss that there are many athletes who have had to face many different obstacles to

become successful. Some have to overcome injury, such as Lindsey Vonn, where as others overcame

having no support system such as Michael Oher. We will then discuss what other types of obstacles

athletes might have to overcome in order to be successful in their sport. (10 minutes)
3) Next I will briefly cover how PowerPoint works, showing them how to open the application by

clicking on it. Showing them how to select a style from the given options. I will also discuss that I do not

want more than 4 bullet points per side, and answer any general questions about the application that they

might have. (15 minutes)

4) We will then cover the rubric, and I will cover, in depth, my expectations for the assignment. See

attached rubric. (10 minutes)

Plan for Independent Practice: Students will then begin their research independently by finding their

athlete and learning about them online. Once they have conducted their research they will begin their

PowerPoint. During this entire time I will be wandering the classroom answering any individual questions

they may have and making sure all the students are on task. (45 minutes)

Closure: We have now learned how incredible these athletes truly are. It is not just their physical ability

that makes them great, but even more so it is their personal journey. Let these stories inspire you to be the

best you can be, and to never give up!

Assessment Based on Objectives: This assignment really addresses the objective of showing students how

to use PowerPoint while giving them a creative and inspiring assignment to display their technological

skill. The strengths of this lesson plan are that it allows the students to share personal stories, learn about

athletes that they can look up to for non-sport related reasons, and use technology to present their

knowledge. The weaknesses of this assignment are that it requires students to accomplish a lot of work in

a short period of time.

Possible Connections to Other Subjects: My lesson relates to reading and writing in that it requires

students to research a topic and write about it. These skills are used to write essays and learn how to read

for information which are both essential to other courses. By looking at the personal development of an

athlete, this lesson does not just teach the student about physical education, but shows them how

resilience is key to being a successful athlete.

Special Need: My student suffers from ADHD and has a difficult time working on the computer for long

periods of time.

Accommodation: Because this assignment requires a lot of time focusing on the computer, I will
allow two brain breaks where they can use GoNoodle, a physical video that can be found online,
to be active. Such technology will allow this student to get out of their seat and shift their
attention from the s
