PLANNING OVERVIEW – TERM

Year Level Unit Title Salvation Topic Aspect of Human Development

2 Gathered Together Church Gathered Together as One (Belonging to a family/community)
Overview – explanation of the content of the unit and how it explores the Salvation Topic and development of the Human Person
This unit of work endeavors to explore the human experience of belonging to a family and the qualities and values families share and show to one another. Exploring and wondering
at families allows students to wonder about God and draw upon their own personal experiences to recognise that He gave us families, as he loves each of us personally. Students will
also delve into Jesus’ story and his family and see how he started a bigger and special family that we are all now apart of known as the Church, which is God’s family. Students will
discover the special and sentimental places and symbols God’s family share together, generate ways to overcome family hardship and grow closer together through Jesus’ First
Commandment and continue to wonder at experiences of family to see the many ways Jesus taught us to love other members of God’s family just as He loved us.

Catholic World View and Teacher Witness (See Teacher Note) Link with Key Understandings and Learning Points by highlighting
Catholics believe family is important for the human person as it endeavours to provide support, love and care to its members which are all essential to a person. Belonging to a family
is imperative for one to develop wholly and according to the Vatican Information Service (2008), “the family is certainly a grace of God which allows what He Himself is to be
revealed.” This means that families allow us to communicate with God and feel his presence and love. The Catholic World View on family can also be seen through Cardinal William J.
Levada (2006), when he refers to family “as the principal cell or building block of human society” when discussing it in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. He highlights how the
theme of family fits into the doctrine of faith and can help members in finding their vocation in loving and serving God.

My own teacher witness coincides with the Catholic outlook on family and upholds the same values and perspectives on its importance.
I believe family is a crucial aspect of the development of the human person and can have everlasting impacts on individuals good and bad. It is from our families where we are
exposed to values, beliefs, morals and experiences, which set us up for life and form us as individuals. It is from our families where we get support and security, love and
companionship, protection and strength and the ability to feel and experience God. In this unit of work I have endeavoured to share a piece of my life with students in the hope to
further develop a trusting and open relationship with them. I hope it gives the students an insight to my own life experiences and journey and allows them to feel a deeper and more
meaningful connection with myself, as well as the content being explored. This has been done through simple additions in lessons such as bringing a family photo in, or
sharing/reflecting on memories and stories of my family and I etc. Through conducting this, students may gather a better understanding of the key learning points at focus within each
step of the process, and be able to draw upon their own experiences to make connections as well.
