Input Analysis Using ARENA Input Analyzer Tool

1.0 LEARNING OUTCOMES:

At the end of the laboratory experiment, student will be able to:
i. Identify most-likely input distribution from histogram.
ii. Perform input analyzer using ARENA Software.
iii. Determine input data expression for used ARENA simulation software.

2.0 INTRODUCTION

Data is used as an input in simulation. It is important to collect and model the data correctly
to get accurate result from simulation. Faulty of input data will give misleading interpretation
of output results Therefore, choosing appropriate distributions of input data is very important.

Common data used in manufacturing system simulation are: the distribution of time between
arrivals and of process time, the distribution of demand and of lead time, the distribution of
time to failure of a component/machine and of repair time, etc. All those data contain
randomness. Histogram and ARENA Input Analyzer will be used to identify the distribution
of the data.

4.0 SIMULATION DATA

Now, you want to continue analyze the inspection process. Lately, many parts are
blocked at the inspection station due to quality problems arise in painting process.
Before, it was known that inspection process takes anywhere from 2 to 4 minutes, but
usually requires 3 minutes. You suspect now this distribution is not valid anymore. So,
you ask the IE to observe and collect inspection time data to identify new distribution
type.

He recorded 100 data of inspection time as following:

Table 4.1: Inspection process time (minutes)

Examine distribution type for inspection process data above by developing histogram and
using Arena Input Analyzer Tool.

5.0 PROCEDURES

5.1 Steps for examine distribution type by developing histogram:

5.1.1 Find range (R) of data, largest - smallest values

Range = largest value - smallest values

= 7.20 - 1.61

= 5.59
5.1.2 Determine the cell interval:

𝑅
𝑖=
1+3.322 log 𝑛

5.59
=
1+3.322 log 100

= 0.731

5.1.3 Determine the number of cell:

𝑅
ℎ=
𝑖

5.59
=
0.731

= 7.65 ≈ 8

5.1.4 Group the data in tabulation.

𝑅
Width of cell =
𝑛𝑜.𝑜𝑓 𝑐𝑒𝑙𝑙

5.59
=
8

= 0.7 ≈ 1

Class Interval Frequency

1.61 – 2.61 8
2.62 – 3.62 16
3.63 – 4.63 34
4.64 – 5.64 25
5.65 – 6.65 14
6.66 – 7.66 3
5.1.5 Draw frequency histogram

5.1.6 Identify most-likely distribution of data from the shape of histogram

Normal Distribution

6.0 RESULT

Present the results gain from histogram development and the results from ARENA Input
Analyzer experiment performed in the laboratory.

 Histogram Development
 ARENA Input Analyzer

7.0 DISCUSSION

Refer to the results of the simulation

i. Determine and explain most likely distribution type of Inspection process time
from your constructed histogram.
The most likely distribution type of Inspection process time from the histogram is
normal distribution.

ii. Determine and explain best fit distribution type of Inspection process time gain
from ARENA Input Analyzer tool.
The best fit distribution type of Inspection process time gain from ARENA Input
Analyzer tool is normal distribution. Normal distribution, sometimes called bell
curve. The normal distribution is symmetrically. It is because half of the data will
fall to the left, while the half data will fall to the right. In this Arena Input
Analyzer Tool, the most of the data fall to the right. The smaller value of mean
square error is the better normal distribution. The value of mean square error is
0.004092. Next, the value of P is greater than 0.15 which is 0.385. The larger
value of P, the better normal distribution.
iii. Determine the distribution expression will be used in ARENA simulation
software.
NORM(4.4, 1.19)

iv. Compare your finding from point i and point ii.

In point 1, we make using the manual step to get the type of histogram. We
calculated the range, cell interval, number of cell and the frequency. The number
of cell that manually is 8. After that, we plot the histogram using Excel software.

In point 2, we get the histogram using the Arena Input Analyzer. We insert the
overall data that convert in txt.file. This Arena Input Analyzer is automatically
give the shape of histogram, type of the distribution, the value mean, standard
deviation and the value of P. The number of cell using Arena Software is 10.

8.0 CONCLUSIONS

i. Conclude your finding on how to determine distribution type of the data from
above experiment.

To determine the distribution type of the data from the above experiment first,

calculated the range of the given data. Then, calculated the cell interval. After

that, calculated the number of cell by refer the cell interval. Next, grouped the

data in tabulation table. After that, insert the information that we calculated and

plotted in the Excel or Minitab. By using this method we get the shape of

histogram.

Next, by using Arena Software we convert the data to txt.file. We fit all the data

to get the type of distribution, value of expression, value P. Lastly, we fit all

summary to get the shape. From this method show that the histogram spread more

to the right side because it value is more than 0.5.

ii. Give your comment why it is important to have the correct distribution type of
data in simulation.

The important to have the correct distribution type of the data in simulation is to

estimate the next demand from customer. From that we can make the

improvement in the system. Next, it is importance because it easier to describe the

behavior of each uncertain input variable.
