CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Ukay-Ukay, it is the Filipino adaptation of a "flea market" and one of those

typical features from the Philippines. It began more than thirty years ago and in a short

period of time became the best bargain sensation in the country, from rags to riches, a

shoe-string enterprise, born out of necessity and grown into a lucrative fashion industry.

Ukay-ukay (in short UK) is actually gouging in a pile of run down clothes, the word is

derived from the Filipino phrase 'halukay' which literally means "digging" or "make a

mess." Nowadays it is a term used for places that sell old clothes, bags, shoes and other

pre-owned goods at very low prices. In a poverty stricken country that is often hit by

calamities, in times of need, ship-loads of second-hand and discount garments and other

relief goods from various parts in the world came in, as forms of support to the people of

the Philippines. But for many reasons the goods piled up and were exchanged to

tradesmen who, in turn sold the clothing to the general public. The first resale stores were

known as "wagwagan" because the dust had to be shaken off ("wagwag") from the worn

apparel. Originally the relief-for-sale stores only carried used wardrobe, later on

shopkeepers began to take in other items like toys and household goods.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

This study aims to analyze and determine the difficulties in an Ukay ukay business.

Specifically it seeks to find answers to following questions:

1. What are the usual circumstances of having an Ukay ukay business?

2. What are their marketing strategy in Ukay ukay?

3. What are the sustainability of Ukay ukay business?

This study was conducted through the desire of the researcher to understand the

consumer’s patronage of Ukay ukay products in Trece Martires City and the factors

affecting their business regarding those circumstance of financial matter and difficulties

to sell the product.

Figure 1 describes the conceptual framework of the study where in the independent

variable is consists of the following: Products sales inevitably lead to greater profits. You

need to increase your monthly sales volume, for example, to achieve greater profits,

Business Orientation a marketing orientated approach means a marketing orientated

approach means a business reacts to what customers want. The decisions taken are

based around information about customer’s needs and wants, rather than what the

business thinks is right for the customer, Employee participation is the process whereby

employee are involved in decision making processes, rather than simply acting on orders

and it is part of a process of empowerment in the workplace and last factor is Taking

advantage of existing knowledge strategies consist of organizational learning practices

for the optimization of existing processes and the improvement of pre-existing knowledge

assets.

1.4 Objective of the Study

This study aims to analyze the buying behavior of the Ukay ukay store and its

Products, related as well in terms in budget, place and kind of the thrift store products.

The following objectives are:

1. To examine the factors affecting their business regarding to the circumstances of

business matter and difficulties to sell the product.

2. To identify what are the marketing strategies of ukay ukay business.

3. To assess sustainability of Ukay ukay business.

1.5 Hypothesis

As the study ends, the Researchers have known about the analyzation and

difficulties of the Ukay ukay business, and to be able to found out the different

factors that affects the Ukay ukay business.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will be a significant endeavor in promoting good work environment in the

workplace and motivations of its employees. This study will also be beneficial to the

students and instructors in strategic management, corporate strategies when they employ

effective learning in their classroom setting particularly in different concepts related to the

analyzation and difficulties of the Ukay ukay management.

 Parents- This is helpful to them for knowing how to start the business for Ukay

ukay.

 Teachers- This study can help them to be able to understand of what is ukay ukay

business and their strategies to start a business.

 Students- This study will help them by understanding the needs of the

students to make their own business and the benefits of quality

education for business.

 Business Practitioners-. This study will be helpful to the retail industry

and business practitioners in training and informing them in the area of

how to start a business in Ukay ukay for all practitioners in business.

 New Researchers- It will also serve as a future reference for researchers

on the subject of ABM and others student.

1.7 Scopes and Limitation of The Study

The survey will be conducted among the Ukay ukay shops in Trece Martires City to the

chosen costumers and Sellers of Ukay ukay. The research limits the survey in the Ukay

ukay shops which will concentrate on the information and the cognition of the costumers

and Sellers about Ukay ukay. The research workers are limited to:

1. The deficiency of cognition about the Ukay ukay.

2. The information in the research may merely be limited to the extent of information

being reviewed and cited by the research workers.

 Halukay - the act of delving, which literally means "digging" or "make a mess.

other state.

 Questionnaire - a list of planned written inquiries related to a peculiar subject with

infinite provided for bespeaking the response to each inquiries intended for entry

to a figure of individuals for answer.

 Survey - to examine as to status state of affairs. or value

 Data - factual information as measuring or statistics used as a footing

for concluding.
