1. Describe your favorite academic subject and explain how it has influenced you:
My favorite academic subject in school is History. Ever since I was in middle school I was
always so interested in history to learn about our past and where we come from, where our roots
are from. History made me understand a lot more things and why we are the country we are this
day. For example, junior year I had Mr. Schneider as my world history teacher who made the
class really interesting and fun, from filming videos to presentations and skits in front of the
class. The more I participated in his class the more I felt like I was actually living that moment
as well. Everything felt so realistic from the videos to the skits and presentations. Learning
about the history of the early 1920’s is very interesting as well. Also, the gold rush and the
history of drugs in America. For example, in history I learned that Caffeine was more addictive
than marijuana, how a alcohol is more intoxicating than cocaine, and tobacco is more damaging
to users health than ecstasy. It caught my attention because they are different drugs than the ones
we have right now. In conclusion, my favorite subject in school is History because we get to
learn more about our past and our roots. In other words, I also learned how to connect with my
education barrier was when I had to face a lot pressure from my family on me, and I had to start
taking advantage of 5th period, which is a studying period where you can go into the class you
need help and get a better grade. For example, I am going to start with my family pressuring me.
My family is always on me about school due to the fact that I am the only girl and I am, the first
one who will graduate, and try my hardest to have a bright future. Like, they always check my
grades and tell me to get my things together so I can do good in school. Also, for 5th period here
at El Capitan High, is really helpful, some of us take advantage of it and others don’t . For
example, I’ve used it to catch up late work or to get some help from teachers.
3. What would you say is your greatest talent or skill? How have you developed and
demonstrated that talent over time?
In my opinion, I believe that the greatest talent or skill that I have become better at would be
speaking in front of others and not be too shy in front of the people who I thought I would have
died if I present in front of them. For example, I got better at my speaking voice in front of
others, I got better at presenting without looking to the presentation all the time and just looking
forward. Also, keeping a serious face in front of the people who I know I would laugh in front
of. I developed this skill over the summer, the reason why I developed it was because during
the summer I had classes and I learned how to present and talk better in front of others in order to
receive an A in that class. For example, I stayed after class to practice a lot in front of my
In ninth grade, I set a goal for myself: I wanted to increase the presence of the Latino Culture
Club at my school—I wanted it to be one of the clubs people talked about and actually wanted to
join because they enjoyed it, not because they felt like they were required to. I initially joined the
club because I wanted to share the beauty of Latino culture with others, and hopefully, even
improve race relations at [my school]. We have a fairly balanced mix of races at my school, but
that doesn’t necessarily mean that our opinions of each other are as fairly balanced. I believe that
to some extent we all represent others who look like us and come from similar backgrounds, and
if we can create favorable impressions of our cultures with others, we can help reduce the racial
