Title: Writing Workshop/SLEs 2 and 6

STEP #1

Type the essay question you were SUPPOSED to come up with during the weekend.

OR

If, PERHAPS you did not. Follow these guidelines to come up with your question.

1. Choose the novel you will be using to FORMULATE or come up with your question.
(ideas: Outsiders, Outside Novel, Any novel we have read in class).

2. Think of two CHARACTERS or MAJOR EVENTS in the novel that you can COMPARE
and CONTRAST. Remember that you will have to have at LEAST one COMPARE paragraph
and TWO CONTRAST paragraphs.

3. Use ONE of these starters to help you. You may PARAPHRASE them:

#1

While NAME OF CHARACTER(S) #1 and NAME OF CHARACTER(S) #2 in the
novel TITLE OF NOVEL IN ITALICS are both _____________________, NAME
OF CHARACTER(S) #1 is _____________________ and NAME OF
CHARACTER #2(S) is __________________.

 #2

While during NAME OF EVENT #1 and NAME OF EVENT #2 in the novel
TITLE OF NOVEL IN ITALICS the characters _ ____________________, during
the NAME OF EVENT #1 the characters _____________________ but during
NAME OF EVENT #2 the characters ______________________
STEP #2

There are TWO methods for completing this step.

METHOD #1: Find evidence from the novel that answers all three part of your thesis statement.
(1 piece of EVIDENCE for COMPARE and 2 pieces of EVIDENCE for CONTRAST). Then come
up with your THREE main arguments. (The Three M’s)
METHOD #1 is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

METHOD #2: Come up with your THREE main arguments. (The Three M’s).Then, find
evidence from the novel that answers all three part of your thesis statement. (1 piece of
EVIDENCE for COMPARE and 2 pieces of EVIDENCE for CONTRAST).
STEP #3

Create a table like this and plug in your information. I need page numbers.

If you know how to make the bubble (circle) diagrams on GoogleDocs, you may do that.
Use One Bubble (circle) for each paragraph and put the information inside.

Paragraph #1 (COMPARE=SAME)

Main Idea/Argument: How are the two characters or events the same? (COMPARE)

Evidence: Give words from the book that prove the “M”

Example from The Hobbit:

“It is true that we were wrongfully waylaid by the Elven King and imprisoned without cause as
we journeyed back to our homeland.”

Paragraph #2 (CONTRAST=DIFFERENT)

STEP #4

wish).

Classmates, you will answer these questions about the document you are looking at ON THE

2. Does the EVIDENCE for Main Argument #1 prove the ARGUMENT? Why or why not?

3. Is Main Argument #2 related to the thesis? Why or why not?

4. Does the EVIDENCE for Main Argument #1 prove the ARGUMENT?Why or why not?

5. Is Main Argument #3 related to the thesis? Why or why not?

6. Does the EVIDENCE for Main Argument #3 prove the ARGUMENT?Why or why not?

STEP #5

REPEAT STEP #4 with a different person in your group.

STEP #6

Look at your classmates’ suggestions, also called FEEDBACK. If you think you need to change
anything based on what they typed, make the changes in your chart. Once you have done that,
