Income for a family being below the the national number in order to meet the family's basic needs.
Just because they are coming from a low income family, they aren’t lesser of a student or of a
person. They can contribute just as much.
They may not come from an advantageous household, so they may not have as many opportunity or
ways to purchase things like supplies or healthy school lunches.
Try to be willing to have options to remedy possible lack of funding among families-- Having free and
reduced pay options for school supplies.
Have options in class to offer students in order to help with their Maslow’s needs so that they can
focus on school, rather than their needs that may not be being met.
Reflection:
● How has your perception of diverse learners grown/changed from your perspective as a student?
It is interesting that people do not have certain cues that tell us where they are financially. It is also interesting
to note the factors that lead to poverty, such as race or upbringing.
● What does this mean for you as a future teacher by reflection on Colorado Department of Education,
Colorado Teacher Quality Standard II: Teachers establish a safe, inclusive and respectful learning
environment for a diverse population of students?
As a future teacher, it is important that I am giving the children of whom I teach, the benefit of the doubt and
are helped with their hierarchy of needs at all given junctures.
