SUBJECT: REPAIR METHOD FOR BALLAST POWER SUPPLY UNIT

Symptom (s):
1. Shorted FET in Ballast Power Supply. (See service bulletin LCD 03-01)
2. Suspected bad Ballast Power Supply.
3. New lamp is installed and fails to ignite.

Details:
As of December 2003, the Ballast Power Supply units have been improved. A
service parts kit (part number TE02141) has been established to provide the
service technician with an alternative to replacing an original Ballast Power
Supply unit. Each kit contains 10 of each part, which will allow for the repair of
10 units. Affected Ballast Power Supply part numbers are HA01001, HA01101,
and HA01161.

Warning:
1. Do not perform work on a conductive surface.
2. Do not subject the unit to physical shock. (i.e. dropping, throwing, etc.)
3. Do not lift or suspend the unit from its cable.
4. The board used in this unit is double sided and has through-hole soldering. Do
not damage the through-holes by removing solder/excessive soldering.
5. Be careful not to touch the silicon dielectric compound. If you touch, clean
hands with soap.
6. Do not touch electronic components immediately after shutting down a power
supply because some parts have heated to an uncomfortable level.

Procedure:

1. Remove Old Parts

Remove screws that secure the top plate.
(SCREW 3×12)

Remove plate by sliding as shown in right picture. Rivet

<Caution>
The rivet is attached to the left side of plate.
Silicon compound was spread under the plate and
top of heatsink.

Remove screw that secures IC01.

<Caution>
Take care to not damage other parts.

Remove IC01, R06, R07, and R11.

<Caution>
R06, R07 was bonded. Heat both sides at the same R11
time to remove. Remove the solder and bond from
the board.

2. Install New Parts

(1) IC01
1) Spread Silicon compound on the rear face.
2) Mount IC01 on Board. IC01
3) Secure with new Screw (M3x8).

<Caution>
Don’t cross-thread the screw.

(2) R11
1) Mount R11 on the Board as shown at right. R11

2) Cut the lead in length of 3.5mm from board. Printed a circle

3) Solder normally.

(3) R06, R07

1)Solder the components in place carefully

(4) D12
Cathode mark
1) Mount D12 between pins 2 and 3 of IC01 to fit
the cathode mark of body like right figures.
2) Tac-solder the component in place carefully.

3. Reattach plate
Check the quantity of Silicon compound on
heatsinks.
Add Silicon compound if necessary.

Re-attach plate as shown. Rivet

<Caution>
The rivet is attached to the left side of plate.

Re-Install mounting plate screws.

Stick red label on the side of C08.

4. Check
(1) Pin 2 of IC01
Check the connection (continuity) of R06/R07 and
C21 with tester.
If they did not connect, re-solder pin 2 of IC01.

(2) Function check If problems still persist, it's possible that damage
If this unit doesn’t work, check solder of pins 1, 3, has occurred to other parts. Contact Hitachi
