Team Norms

As a two team group, we wish to distribute the work equally so no one team member is shouldering all the work.
We are able to hear each other out if a new idea or plan comes to mind with the product we are creating.
Each member will be able to access any file that may be needed if one member is not present.
Each of us must be on the same page when it comes to working on a certain task to make sure we get things finished
when they are due.
We are to be in communication with each other to see what the other is working on and what they have completed.
COMMUNICATION IS KEY!
If any disagreements were to arise, we are to find a solution as quickly as possible so we may prevent wasting more
time that could be used working on our project.

PRESENTATION AND JUSTIFICATION OF THE
PROBLEM

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Consider the issues that come with the people currently dealing with Expanders. They have issues dealing with the
beginning stages of a sore mouth and not being able to eat any solid foods. After a couple of weeks that sore mouth would
go away, however, they would have to deal with the new problem of getting use to eating solid foods again. How can they
do so freely when food would constantly get stuck in the roof of their mouth creating an atmosphere of disgust and
irritation? As the dental industry and the need for expanders continue to grow they have yet to find a solution that is cheap
and reusable for people suffering wearing expanders.

Reflection of survey

Based on the survey and the articles that we have read, we have concluded that the
following on our Product Specifications are what people are looking for. Even on our survey
we can see that there is a problem with the issue of solid food getting stuck in expanders.
Lots of people want a simple solution, something that wont hurt them or something that is
not so expensive. We want to provide that easy solution to people so they don't have to
struggle with nasty stuck food.

Construction of a testable Prototype

Proof of building our Prototype:

First, we got a piece of aluminum and cut it to this shape.

Second, we wrapped the piece of aluminum in Nexcare waterproof tape.

Third, we wrapped it again so it would less likely break.

Finally, we cut the excess tape.

Prototype Testing and data collection plan

Prototype Testing & Data collection

For the testing of the prototype we will have a piece of aluminum wrapped in waterproof medical
tape, then using it with an example of a "expander" as a demonstration for others to see.

Before the testing of our prototype, we had built something to represent our expander since we did not have an actual
expander. We used two blocks of wood to make an opening of 1/8 of an inch. (This is how much space is between the top
of the expander and the roof of the mouth.)

After we were done with making of our "expander", we put bread inside to represent the stuck
food.

From there we got our prototype (Expander Toothpick) and started pushing out the "stuck" food.

https://www.innovationportal.org/portfolio/46118/print-layout 27/33
5/13/2019 Portfolio | Innovation Portal | M&J

Our objective in testing our prototype was to test to see if our Expander Toothpick fit between the
small opening and if it was strong enough to push the "stuck" food.

 Those examples would be:
To be able to reach food that can get stuck on the roof of the mouth by using the
product to get rid of that food.

Procedure
In the procedure you would need to have an a expander to need the use of the
expander toothpick.
You would then want to push it up to the top to and though to push out any unwanted
stuck food in your expander.
Continue to do so when you are satisfied of removing how ever much food that may be
stuck.
