Contractors Good Morning.
Chief Seattle Who are you and why did you come here?
Contractors We are here to cut down the trees in this area and level the ground.
We have taken up this contract.
Chief Seattle Who asked you to do so?
Contractors The American Government. You can see the orders.
Chief Seattle What are they going to build here?
Contractors A new rail road.
Chief Seattle What do you mean by a rail road?
Contractors The rail is a vehicle. It does not go on land. It moves on an iron track. It
moves much faster than the cars and busses.
Chief Seattle But for that we are cutting down thousands of trees. We are
destroying the flora and fauna of this area.
Contractors Yes. We have to. Otherwise we cannot build a rail road.
Chief Seattle I don’t know the advantages of your trains but we are going to lose a
lot with it.
Contractors What is it?
Chief Seattle We are going to have environmental imbalance.
Contractors What do you mean by environmental imbalance?
Chief Seattle You are going to cut down the trees. As a result thousands of birds and
animals are going to lose shelter. Our rain fall is also going to be
affected. As a result this area will become desert soon.
Contractors We don’t know all these things. The government ordered us to cut
down trees.
Chief Seattle O. K. We will talk to the government.

us. How can they buy if we are not owners of this land? The earth is not a single person’s property.
For that matter trees and animals also have a share in it. So far I have thought that we are savage and

This is the house I lived for many years. I lived here as a boy and as a man. The old house hasn’t
changed much. It was built with solid blocks of granite and wasn’t altered at all. But there was a new
outhouse, and there were fewer trees. The turnstile that used to be here has gone. Oh! The jackfruit tree is still
there. I remember the music of a piano, the chiming of a grandfather clock, the constant twitter of budgerigars
on the veranda, grandfather cranking up the old car. I kept my valuable in the shallow of the jackfruit tree.
Marbles, A book, A few old coins I’d collected. Those memories are still fresh in mind. Those are great days. I
can’t get back those days again.

Dear Diary

Tomorrow is going to be great day for our race. It is going to change our lives completely. The white rulers are
going to take away lands from my people and me. This is a chance for me to express our ideas and feelings. I
have to echo the thoughts of my people. My speech should move the white rulers. They are behaving in a silly
way. How can one buy and sell land. They say that they would by this land from us. How can they buy if we

b) Good morning to the Head master, my respected teachers and my dear friends. The topic of my speech
is Environment. Environment is the surrounding in which we live. It is the source of life. Our whole life is
dependent to the environment. It directs our life and determines our proper growth and development. Good
or bad quality of social life depends on the quality of our natural environment. The need of human beings for
food, water, shelter and other things depends on the environment around us. There is a balanced natural cycle
exists between environment and lives of human beings, plants and animals. Human society is playing vital role
in degenerating the natural environment which in turn negatively affects the lives on this planet. All the human
actions in this modern world directly impact the whole ecosystem.
All the actions have brought a big change in this planet which resulted in many environmental
problems. Increasing demand of technologies and industries in the modern time impacts the nature.
The increasing invention of new technologies has changed the interaction of people with environment
which permits more population to grow. Some of the environmental problems are rapid growth in
world population, deteriorating natural resources, diminishing forests and wetlands, erosion of soil and
coral reefs, depleting underground water, regular shortage of fresh drinking water, vanishing plants, in
Africa, Asia, Latin America and Middle East. Some other issues are loss of biodiversity, rapid extinction
of some important animal species, collapse of fisheries, rising air and water pollution, rise in
atmospheric temperature, thinning of ozone layer, spoiling rivers, seas and underground resources.
So we must awake and try our level best to protect the environment.

Dear Diary

Today is a memorable day for me. I never forget this day. Today I visited the house where we used to live
twenty five years ago. The house has not changed much. A colonel’s family is living in that house now. The
colonel and his wife went to the club. Their little girl has talked to me. She cordially invited me into the house.
The jackfruit tree is still there. There I kept my treasures then. The little girl climbed the tree and gave my
treasures back to me. It’s wonderful day. I never forget this day.

b) Prepare a speech on ‘importance of planting and protecting trees.

Respected head master, learned teachers and my dear friends,

I am delighted to share my ideas on the importance of planting trees today,
How does planting trees help the environment? Why planting trees is important to reduce global warming?
This is what we are precisely going to talk about. According to the environmental protection agencies, planting
trees is a must if we want to save our planet. Trees not only remove harmful chemicals from the soil, but also
help reduce the greenhouses leading to global warming. Go on and see how planting trees helps the
environment.

Advantages of planting trees in reducing global warming

1. An average size tree creates sufficient oxygen in one year to provide oxygen for a family of four.
2. Planting trees in the right place around buildings and homes can cut air-conditioning costs up to 50 percent.
3. Planting trees for the environment is good as they are renewable, biodegradable and recyclable.
4. If we plant 20 million trees, the earth will get with 260 million more tons of oxygen.
5. Once acre of trees can remove up to 2.6 tons of Carbon Dioxide each year.
6. During photosynthesis, trees and other plants absorb carbon dioxide and give off oxygen.
7. Trees keep in cheek the air and water pollution.
8. Why planting trees is important is evident as they are the natural habitat of the animals and birds, as well as
many endangered species.
9. Planting trees means more wood and paper products which can be easily recycled.
10. A newly planted whole forest can change tones of atmospheric carbon into wood and other fibrous tissue,
thus reducing global warming.
So, start digging immediately if you have the means to plant a tree.

Thank you very much
