WHAT IS GAME SENSE?

 Game sense is a student centred approach used to

simultaneously teach tactical awareness, strategic
thinking, and fundamental skills through participating in
adapted games.

 Offers an effective way of developing students‟ skills and

techniques, as they are learnt in a „real‟ game situation
with a degree of pressure that occurs in games, such as
the need for tactical thinking.

 The desired effect of implementing GS is that students

become more tactically aware, which will result in being
able to make better decisions during a game.
(Towns, 2002)
WHAT IS GAME SENSE?
 A Game Sense approach prompts students to think critically
about what to do in the game, as well as how to do it.

 Game Sense allows position movement techniques to be learnt

in the same context that it will later be played.

 Technique and game understanding are inter -related.

 Your child‟s teacher will begin by playing an adapted game,

which slowly builds your child‟s fundamental movement skills,
and confidence.

 E xampl e: To begin, half of the class would each have a soccer ball.
The students would need to dribble the ball from one starting point, to
the target line. The other half of the class would be trying to gain
possession of the ball from their partner.

 Skills being developed: fundamental movement skills (dribbling a ball),

tactics, decision making, and the skill of defending.

(Pill, 2016).
HOW IS IT CONNECTED TO THE
SYLLABUS?
 A Game Sense approach endeavours to teach “movement
skills and concepts to enable students to participate in a
range of physical activities – confidently, competently and
creatively” (NESA, 2018, p. 10).

 Game Sense has explicit connections to specific syllabus

outcomes for Year 2, such as outcome PD1-5 and PD1-8.

Eg. Through teacher guided questions, students will

propose a range of ways to solve movement challenges
while participating in games (NESA, 2018).

STRENGTHS AS A TEACHING APPROACH

Implementing a Game Sense approach has proven to

increase the amount of time that students are physically
active during PE. One pedagogical affordance of
implementing a Game Sense approach is that teachers are
able to cover more content in a shorter amount of time, as
students learn multiple skills simultaneously. Additionally,
there is decreased behavioural problems, as students are
engrossed in the activity.

Implementing a game sense approach has produced

players that are able to perform skills to the demands of
the game circumstances. Not only do students learn skills in
a more realistic way, but research has confirmed that
having fun is a prime motivator for students to partake in
physical education. (Light, 2012)
