CARTRIDGE MUSIC (also DUET FOR CYMBAL and PIANO DUET, TRIO, etc.) ach performer makes his own part from the material supplied, which is : 1. 20 numbered sheets having shapes inscribed 5 2. A transparent sheet with points ; 3. A transparent sheet with circles. 4. A transparent sheet with a circle marked like a stop-watch, 5. A transparent sheet with a dotted curving line having at one end a circle. Talking the sumbered sheet corresponding to the number of available cartidges* (each with its own amplifier and loudspeaker), place over it all che transparent sheets, arranging the Sth so that the citcle atthe end of the dored line contains a point outside a shape and so cha the dotted line intersects at least one point within one of the shapes. (If ro such point exists, no action is indicated) Then, following the doted line from either end to the other, read the actions to be made (see below). ‘Time bracket(s) for action(s) to be made given by encrance(s) and exit(s) of dotted line with respect t0 the stop~ wwacch circle, If no such entrance and exie occus, no specific time is given, The action should then fll ouside any time bracket(s) established. The seconds given refer to any one of the minutes ofthe tral time programmed which may be any agreed-upon length, Incersection of the doted line with a point within a shape indicates a sound produced in any manner on the object i insened inthe cute coneponding ota shape The shapes maybe nib in any way t bing about cis A corespoodeoce) : Incersction of the doce tne with point ouside a sage inces sound produced by any other means han by we of the objects inserted in the cartridges (auxiliary sounds). Ic is Convenient for the production of “auxiliary sounds” to place contact microphones on the objects (microphone stand, table, etc) co which the cartridges are atached. If this is done, many “auxiliary sounds” having an electronic character are easly produced, : Intersection of the dotted line with a circle within a shape indicates alteration of the amplitude control of the amplifies. 4 ‘Take a reference point o: line in order to get ewo ceadings (in the case ofa real intersection) oF one (jn the case of a tangent). Notate these, using one or both in performance. 4 shape indicates any alteration of the tone control on the ‘Similary, intersection of the dotted line with a circle outside loest shape. Readings may be obtained as above for amplifer which is connected to the cartridge corresponding to the cl amplicude, dicated when points of circles are incersected by the dove line within ey Repetve puters (ike ape ops) a3 serene the dove ie toes isell-Asy amount of reperon inclading «Faction ofthe indicated action a ‘may be performed. g ‘hen the positon ofthe pois o ccs makes heeding ambigus,ke cher reaing, its, or bah : [When acne sinters by bath the boundary of shape and he de ln, change of object in the cade i = indicated. This change will be audible, if the volume on the amplifier is up. h Make any numberof readings, shifting he poston of eansparencis 2, 3, and 4 with respecte the sheet wit shapes | nly after all points within shapes have been used for readings from the same or changiog point outside the shapes “Let the numberof performers be at leas that ofthe cartridges and not greater than ewice the number of cartridges. [All events, ordnazily thought to be undesirable, such as feed-back, humming, howling, ete, are to be accepted in this siuation. If convenient, the loudspeakers are to be distributed around the audience. The cartridges and amplifiers, however, must be fairly close together and accessible to all the performers. For DUET FOR CYMBAL, employ a contact microphone on the instrument. Use sheet number 1. Make readings as above. Where change of objec is indicated, lower cymbal into water or onto piano strings or onto a mat or other Imaterial or make some such action that changes the sound radically. For PIANO DUET, employ a contact microphone on the soundboard of the instrument, If using sheet 2, let one shape correspond to the keyboard, one to the strings. If using shee 4, le the shapes correspond to keyboard, strings, jnterior construction noises exterior construction noises. Other sheets may be used where further distinctions are made (of range, ot mode of action). Where change of object is indicated, employ principle of piano preparation, but in some radical way (eg, blankets, pillows, large sheets of plastic, newspapers, ec) JOHN CAGE, Stony Point, July 1960 77 canridge an ordinary phonograph pick-up ia which customarily «playing needle i inserted ee of linge any ob wil in casera be ime ee of wi» toothpick,» pipe-leanes, srw, ee).
