Pear

Pears are trees originating from tropical climates in Western Europe, Asia and North Africa.
Trees are of medium height, can reach 10-17 meters but most are short trees that have lush
leaves.

Criss-crossed, oval-shaped leaves that are wide but can also be long-lined-shaped
(lanceolate) slim. Length between 2 and 12 cm. In most species, the leaves are shiny green or
silvery white. Most trees shed their leaves in the winter (fall) with the exception of two
species of Pears in Southeast Asia, always evergreen.

Trees are very weather-resistant freezing in winter up to -25 ° C and -40 ° C unless species
that are always green leafy only hold cold to -15 ° C.

Flowers bloom around April, white with a little yellow or pink. Flowers consist of 5 crown
leaves. Flower diameter between 2 to 4 cm. Fruit types of pome fruit with a diameter of 1-4
cm in the species of liar, while the cultivated tree produces large pears with sizes up to 18 × 8
cm. The shape of the fruit is diverse, most species produce round fruit. Most like European
Pears produce fruit that enlarges at the bottom and is slender at the base of the fruit. The fruit
is ready for harvest in the early fall. There are around 30 tree species from the Pyrus genus
including:

Pyrus amygdaliformis - Almond-leafed Pear,Pyrus austriaca - Austrian Pears, Pyrus

balansae, Pyrus betulifolia, Pyrus bourgaeana - Iberian pears, Pyrus bretschneideri - Pir Yes,
Pyrus calleryana - Pear Callery, Pyrus caucasica - Pears Cacasia, Pyrus communis - European
pear, Pyrus cordata - Plymouth pear, Pyrus cossonii - Pir Algeria, Pyrus elaeagrifolia -
Oleaster-leafed Pear, Pyrus fauriei, Pyrus kawakamii - Evergreen Pear.
The pear tree is a food source plant for the larvae of several species of Lepidoptera. Some
pear species and their cultivars are mainstay agricultural commodities, for example: European
Pears (Pyrus communis) are commonly planted in Europe and North America Pears Yes
(Pyrus bretschneideri) known as Shandong Pears or Hebei Pears Pir Nashi (Pyrus pyrifolia) is
commonly planted in East Asia and is known by various names: Sand Pear, Asian Pears,
Apple Pears, Japanese Pears, Korean Pears or Taiwanese Pears. Indonesia is one of the
largest importers of pears, Xiang Li (Pyrus sinkiangensis) from Xinjiang province, China.

Some species are used as ornamental plants or as rootstock for European Pear species and
Asian pears. Siberian pears (Pyrus ussuriensis) whose fruits are not edible are crossed with
European Pears to produce pest resistant cultivars.
Pear Callery (Pyrus calleryana) or Pir Bradford is widely grown as an ornamental plant in
North America. Pyrus salicifolia which has lush, silvery tree leaves is also widely planted as
an ornamental plant.

Pears can be eaten fresh, processed as canned fruit, fruit juice and sometimes as dried fruit.
Pear juice is the basic ingredient of jelly or jam, although it is often mixed with other fruit
juices. Fermented pear juice is called perry.

Unripe pears if eaten are said to facilitate bowel movements (have a laxative effect), while
ripe pears have a diuretic effect and there is the possibility of making people drowsy. Pears
contain sorbitol so that if eaten too much can cause bloating in the stomach and cause
exhaustion.

Pear tree wood is very good for making carving materials, number one quality furniture and
wind instruments. Small pieces of pear wood are good for cooking with fumigation
techniques because they give off a fragrant aroma. Grated pears can also be used as meat
tenderizers before cooking.
