B A Journalism and Mass Communication

PROGRAMME’S MISSION & OBJECTIVES

Mission:

The mission of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication,


Periyar Institute of Distance Education (PRIDE), Periyar University is to prepare the
responsible journalists for society with a knowledge about people, understanding
human being and the diversity, developing skills with cutting-edge research on human
behavior to evaluate socially to inculcate professionalism for appropriate action and
evolve them as media professionals to deal with the problems Journalism and Mass
Communication.

PRIDE extends its service activities to advance the overall mission of the
University.

PRIDE strives to accomplish the goals through the following activities:

a. Objectives & Outcomes

Excellence in Teaching

Providing opportunities to students with a knowledge and skill about human being,
society, politics, economics and culture through need based courses and functional
learning.

Excellence in Graduate Training

Producing the next generation of leaders in research, teaching and in the applications
of Journalism and Mass Communication with special reference to our society.

Excellence in Service

Creating opportunities for knowledge sharing and developing professional expertise,


providing impetus to developing high journalistic standards to enhance the committed
and responsible social behaviour and harmony among people, collaborating with
media houses and leading practitioners.

b. Relevance of the program with HEI’s Mission and Goals:

One of the fundamental aims of education is to provide opportunities for


learners at all level. This programme affords quality higher education to learners
interested in pursuing higher education through distance mode. This programme
would help them to transform them into intellectually competent human resources to
strengthen democratic values of the nation. This programme is effective in imparting
quality education through flexi-timings.

Journalism and Mass Communication helps us to understand how social


dynamics provide for newer developments and how various parameters contribute to
each and every situation. The knowledge about collective human behaviour will
certainly be helpful to focus on the multiple dimensions of the society and identify the
ways and means to improve the same for holistic growth and development of the
nation. Journalism and Mass Communication is diverse in its focus and research, it
aid students for a wide variety of careers.

In accordance with the mission of Periyar University as an intensive research


intensive institution, the teaching programme of BA in Journalism and Mass
Communication is based on contemporary information and structure with a strong
emphasis on the acquisition of academic and research skills.

c. Nature of prospective target group of learners:

The curriculum has been designed to fulfill the needs of diversified learners
including rural people, low income group, minorities, underprivileged. This curriculum
will fulfill the needs of the special group learners in teaching, social workers, media
practitioners, communication professionals, PR and elected representatives and
government officials.

B.A. Journalism and Mass Communication course suitability

Candidates should have good communication skills, patience, ability to work with all
kinds of social / cultural and age groups are the essential for it.

They should have a genuine interest in people, their behavior and have empathy for
their problems and needs.
They should be sensitive and caring and have the ability to understand people of very
different backgrounds and upbringing.

Those who want to become Assistant Professors at colleges / university level should
pursue their Master’s degree plus NET, SET exams will be eligible.

How B.A. Journalism and Mass Communication course is beneficial?

B.A. Journalism and Mass Communication degree serves as a basis for further studies
in this field such as M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. degrees in Journalism and Mass
Communication, the successful completion of which makes are eligible for the post of
an Assistant Professors in any University / College. With B.A. Journalism and Mass
Communication degree one can write TNPSC and UPSC examinations at the
appropriate group level. Learners can develop good communication and interpersonal
skills through this programme.
