Energy & Atmosphere: Summary of Credits

Energy and Atmosphere

Studies have repeatedly shown that efficient buildings and appropriate land use offer opportunities to
save money while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. One such study, conducted by the New Buildings
Institute, investigated 121 LEED‐certified commercial office buildings in the United States and found that
they used 24% less energy than the national average.

Energy and Atmosphere

CASE STUDY: THE ALBERT APARTMENTS, PORTLAND OR

31% annual energy

savings over a baseline
case for buildings of
similar size and use.

It includes 48 rooftop‐mounted solar hot water panels for pre‐heated and recirculating hot
water. These panels are projected to generate 50% of the building's annual residential
energy needs for hot water. Also, a 29.6 kW rooftop solar PV array generates approximately
20% of building's common area energy through its photovoltaic system.

offsets

Renewable Energy Certificates and Carbon Offsets

1. The project has a minimum 10-year contract

with the fuel provider.
2. The contract with the fuel provider includes
both the fuel and all associated RECs.
3. If the fuel provider does not also provide
RECs, the project must purchase offsets for
100% of the renewable – 10 years
