4.0 INVESTIGATION DETAILS

4.1 FIELDWORK

4.1.1 Drilling of Boreholes, Performance of SPTs

The field investigations consisted of drilling and sampling of six (06) boreholes down to a
maximum depth of 15.0 meters below the existing ground surface. The locations of boreholes
are shown in FIGURE-1 and the co-ordinates of boreholes are presented in TABLE-1.

The drilling at the borehole location was carried out using one of our ACKER AD-II drilling
rigs. The drilling was generally commenced by wash boring method. A tricone bit was used
to cut and loosen the particles, penetrating through the overburden soil by rotary action, till
final depth of borehole. Standard Penetration Tests (SPTs) were performed in the overburden
layers. The SPTs were performed in accordance with ASTM D 1586 using a split spoon
sampler of 35mm inner diameter and 50mm outer diameter.

The drive assembly of SPT consists of a 63.5 Kg. weight, a driving head and a guide
permitting a free fall of 76cm. The sampler was driven 45cm into the soil for each test or to
refusal. The number of blows for every 15cm penetration was counted for the full 45cm of
driving. The number of blows required to drive the sampler, the last 30cm of penetration was
recorded as Standard penetration resistance. The samples recovered from the split spoon
sampler were visually inspected and classified as per ASTM 2488. A description of soil
samples recovered including change in stratification, colour, structure, density grain size,

organic material, shape of particles, moisture condition and cementation was recorded in the
form of field borehole log along with the presentation of SPT number.

All the disturbed samples recovered from the split spoon sampler were preserved in
polyethylene bags, identified by boring number, sample number, depth and standard
penetration resistance for each 15cm increments, and later on were sent to RGF laboratory at
Riyadh for further identification and testing.

The borehole logs are presented in APPENDIX “A” of this report.

4.2 PLATE LOAD TESTS

Two (02) plate load tests were performed at the locations designated by the client shown in
FIGURE-1. The tests were performed as per ASTM D-1196 under dry and inundated
conditions. The tests were executed at a depth of 2.0 meters below existing ground level in a
open test pit. The plate was loaded up to a maximum pressure of 423kPa using reaction load.
Settlement was recorded and the load-settlement curve was developed. The plate load test
results and the corresponding load settlement curve are presented in APPENDIX “A” of this
report.

4.3 LABORATORY TESTING

Based on the sub-surface strata encountered at site, a laboratory testing program was carefully
prepared. The laboratory testing was performed at our Riyadh Soil & Material Testing

5.0 RESULTS OF THE INVESTIGATION

5.1 GENERAL

Borehole drilling, in-situ testing and sampling were done in the field and samples retrieved
were tested in our laboratory. Results of the investigations discussed in this report are based
on the data obtained at the investigated points, test results and on the engineering
interpretation of the data obtained. It is possible to have variations in the ground conditions.
In case of any variation revealed during execution of the work, the matter can be referred back
to RGF for further analyses.

5.2 SUBSURFACE STRATA

The subsurface strata at the site as revealed from the borehole logs consisted of the following
layers:

Layer-1: Random Fill (0.0 to 0.5~3.5 meters)

The top layer extending from ground surface to a depth ranging between 0.5 and 3.5 meters
consisted of random fill material comprising of brown/light brown, silty SAND with gravel
and clayey SAND with gravel mixed with asphalt pieces. The in-situ compactness of this layer
was found to be in loose to very dense condition with SPT N-values in the order of 05 blows
to more than 50 blows for 30cm penetration of the split spoon sampler.

Geotechnical Investigation: 60MTPD Chlorine & Alkaline Expansion Plant & 150MTPD Calcium Chloride Plant in Riyadh
Page No.: 8
Layer-2: Overburden Deposits (0.5~3.5 to 10.0~15.0 meters)
Overburden deposits comprising of brown, clayey SAND with or without gravel, lean CLAY,
sandy lean CLAY and gravelly lean CLAY with sand was encountered in all boreholes below
random fill down to the final depth of the borehole. The in-situ compactness of this layer was
found to be in dense to very dense condition with SPT N-values in the order of 32 blows to
more than 50 blows for 30cm penetration of the split spoon sampler.

The relationship of N-values with various engineering properties of soils is given in

TABLE-2.

5.3 GROUND WATER CONDITION

Groundwater was not encountered in any borehole down to the maximum depth of borehole
during the present geotechnical investigation. Standpipe piezometers were installed in BH-01
and BH-07 for further groundwater monitoring.

5.4 SOIL CLASSIFICATION TESTS

The classification tests performed on selected representative samples of sub-surface materials

consisted of determination of natural moisture content, liquid limit and plastic limits and
particle size distribution. The tests were performed in accordance with relevant ASTM
Standards (ASTM D-422, D-2487 and D-4318). The material was classified as SC and CL
according to unified soil classification system (USCS). The moisture content of soil samples
ranged between 6.8% and 21.7%. The Liquid Limits varied between 27% and 37% while
Plasticity index varied between 8% and 15%.

Page No.: 9
5.5 CHEMICAL TESTS

Chemical tests were performed on representative soil samples taken from boreholes. The
chemical analysis of soil samples indicates that chloride content ranged between 1110ppm and
2480ppm (0.111% to 0.248%) and Sulphate content ranged between 2190ppm and 3574ppm
(0.219% to 0.3574%). The pH value ranged between 8.2 and 8.5.

6.0 GEOTECHNICAL PARAMETERS

Geotechnical parameters represent the soil properties determined based on in-situ and
laboratory testing performed. These parameters are usually used for design. The parameters
are as follows:

6.1 UNIT WEIGHT AND SHEAR STRENGTH PARAMETER

The following soil parameters were assigned based on correlations between in-situ testing
(SPT) and soil classification.

Select Fill:
Unit Weight = γ = 18kN/m3
Angle of Internal Friction =  = 35o
Cohesion = C = 0

Sandy lean CLAY/Lean CLAY with sand:

Unit Weight = γ = 19kN/m3
Angle of Internal Friction =  = 22o
Cohesion = C = 100kN/m2

Clayey SAND:
Unit Weight = γ = 19kN/m3
Angle of Internal Friction =  = 28o
Cohesion = C = 25kN/m2

Geotechnical Investigation: 60MTPD Chlorine & Alkaline Expansion Plant & 150MTPD Calcium Chloride Plant in Riyadh
Page No.: 11
6.2 COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION BETWEEN SOIL AND CONCRETE

The angle of friction between the soil and concrete can be taken as 24°. The coefficients of
friction are defined as the tangent of the angle of friction. (Reference: Foundation Analysis &
Design by J. E. Bowles, 5th Edition). As such the following friction factor will be applicable:

- Coefficient of friction between soil and concrete = tan 24° = 0.44

6.3 COEFFICIENT OF EARTH PRESSURES

The  value of 35 degrees should be adopted for the granular soil for the purpose of earth
pressure calculations. Accordingly the coefficients of active, passive and at rest pressures are
estimated as follows:

(a) Coefficient of
1  Sin
Active Earth Pressure (Ka) = = 0.27
1  Sin

(b) Coefficient of
1  Sin
Passive Earth Pressure (Kp) = = 3.70
1  Sin

(c) Coefficient of
"At rest" Earth Pressure (Ko) = 1 - Sin = 0.43

In case of backfill materials, it is considered that these materials will be granular in texture
and compacted to a dry density of not less than 95% of the maximum Modified Proctor
Density (ASTM D 1557) in case of the structural fill and not less than 90% in case of general

Geotechnical Investigation: 60MTPD Chlorine & Alkaline Expansion Plant & 150MTPD Calcium Chloride Plant in Riyadh
Page No.: 12
backfill. The granular backfill materials compacted to these recommended density will
develop an angle of friction of the order of 35 degrees. Therefore the above recommended
values of coefficients of Earth will also be applicable to the granular backfill materials, placed
and compacted in accordance with the recommendations given in this report. (Reference:
Foundation Analysis & Design by J. E. Bowles, 5th Edition).

6.4 MODULUS OF ELASTICITY (Es)

The immediate settlement of shallow foundation depends upon the elastic properties of the
load bearing strata, characterized by Modulus of Elasticity (Es). The Modulus of Elasticity of
soils is directly proportional to N-values recorded during SPTs. The constant of
proportionality depends upon the type of soils in which the tests are carried out. The Modulus
of Elasticity of soils is directly proportional to N-values recorded in SPTs for non-cohesive
strata while for stiff to hard silts/clays the modulus of elasticity depends on the value of
unconfined compression obtained. For the strata encountered in this particular investigations,
following relationship between Es and N-values were used as suggested by NAVFAC:

SOIL TYPE Su/N Es/N

Cohesive Silts and clays 200-500 -

Clean, fine to medium sands & slightly silty -

700
sands

Coarse sands & sands with little gravel - 1000

Sandy gravels and gravel - 1200

Page No.: 13
Where: Es = Modulus of Elasticity, KPa
N = SPT N-Value

6.5 SOIL PROFILE TYPE CLASSIFICATION

In the absence of shear wave velocity data from this specific site and based on SBC-301,
Table-14.1.1, the sub-surface strata at site below the proposed foundation level can be
classified as Soil Profile Type-“C”.

Geotechnical Investigation: 60MTPD Chlorine & Alkaline Expansion Plant & 150MTPD Calcium Chloride Plant in Riyadh
Page No.: 14
* Technical Discussion on field tests & laboratory tests
may be included to arrive at the recommendation for
Net Allowable Bearing capacity.

7.0 FOUNDATION DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

7.1 GENERAL

In order for the foundations to be safe, the load carrying strata must be competent to sustain
the imposed loading without undergoing shear failure and at the same time any settlements of
the foundations must not exceed the tolerable limits. Therefore, the load carrying
characteristics of the strata must be evaluated from these two considerations. Furthermore site
development plan was not available at the time of report preparation. Recommendations are
given based on the current existing ground level. Should the site grading dictates appreciable
cutting and/or filling, RGF, should be made aware of these changes to verify its
recommendations given below.

7.2 SELECTION OF FOUNDATION TYPES

In appreciation of the subsurface condition, any type of shallow foundation (isolated/strip/mat) is

considered feasible for the proposed structure at the site. The mat foundation can be designed of
variable thickness depending on the loads within building section. Provision of deep foundations
will not be necessary for any of the proposed structure.

7.3 DEPTH AND WIDTH OF FOUNDATIONS

The subsurface conditions at the site indicated the presence of random fill ranging in thickness
between 0.5 meters to 3.5 meters. The random fill was underlain by dense to very dense
overburden soil deposits that extended to the end of the drilled boreholes. Placement of

Geotechnical Investigation: 60MTPD Chlorine & Alkaline Expansion Plant & 150MTPD Calcium Chloride Plant in Riyadh
Page No.: 15
foundations on random fill is not recommended as uncontrolled settlement will occur within
the fill. It is our recommendation that the random fill be removed from within the structure
footprint with an additional extension of 1.0 meters from all sides. Upon reaching the natural
overburden soil layer, we recommend proof rolling of the excavated level prior to the
placement of select fill material. The select fill shall be placed in lifts of 25cm each compacted
to a minimum of 95% of modified proctor density.
Composition of select fill material (such as gravel %,
sand % and silt %) may be added.
In appreciation of the subsurface condition and the type of structure to be constructed at the
site, the foundations of the structure can be designed as shallow foundation
(Isolated/strip/mat) placed on natural strata or compacted select fill at a minimum depth of 1.5
meters from existing ground level.

The width of footing must not be less than 1.0 meter for isolated footing and 0.75 meter for
strip footing.

7.4 SETTLEMENT AND ALLOWABLE BEARING PRESSURES

Allowable shear calculations as well as settlement evaluation has been made utilizing the
geotechnical parameters determined. It is the allowable settlement of foundation rather than
shear failure of the ground which will govern the assignment of the allowable bearing pressure
for design of foundations. The maximum allowable settlement for spread and mat foundations
is generally considered as 25mm and 50mm respectively and 75% of total settlement is
acceptable as differential settlement.

Geotechnical Investigation: 60MTPD Chlorine & Alkaline Expansion Plant & 150MTPD Calcium Chloride Plant in Riyadh
Page No.: 16
The bearing capacity calculations for shear failure are presented in TABLE-3. The expected
settlement under a range of foundation sizes subjected to a range of net allowable bearing
pressures are summarized in TABLES-4 to 6.

In consideration of the above and based on the type of structures to be constructed at the site,
we recommend the use of any type of shallow foundations (spread/strip/mat) placed on natural
soil or select fill material at a minimum depth of 1.5 meters below existing ground level. A net
allowable bearing pressure of 150kN/m2 (1.5kg/cm2) is recommended for foundations placed
on natural soil or select fill strata. The subgrade modulus for the different types and sizes of
foundations can be calculated from the relevant settlement tables provided.

As a general note, any loose or soft pockets, if encountered at the bottom level of the footing,
shall be replaced with a well-compacted granular material. The foundation excavation must be
sprayed with plenty of water and must be proof-rolled prior to the placement of foundations.

7.5 SLAB-ON-GRADE

For the slab-on-grade, considering that within the site area the random fill exists down to 0.5
and 3.5 meters, we recommend that all random fill material should be removed from within
the building footprint area and replaced by structural backfill placed in layers (loose lift not to
exceed 25cm) and compacted to a minimum of 95% of the modified proctor density. A
subgrade modulus of 20,000kN/m3 can be used in the design of slab placed on compacted
select fill material.

Geotechnical Investigation: 60MTPD Chlorine & Alkaline Expansion Plant & 150MTPD Calcium Chloride Plant in Riyadh
Page No.: 17
8.0 THE EARTHWORK

8.1 CLEARING, GRUBBING, LEVELING AND GRADING

Prior to any construction activity at the site, it must be cleared of all debris and random fill
material. This can be carried out by graders/dozers. For leveling and grading, stakes should be
installed on a grid marked by Surveying Crews. The required levels to be attained through cut
or fill at the grid points must also be identified.

The leveling and grading can be carried out by normal earth moving machine in soils. No
special problems are anticipated in excavating and moving these soils with excavators,
scrappers and dozers.

8.2 EXCAVATIONS

The excavations for construction of foundations, other substructures or trenches for utility
lines can be made in upper soil. The excavation in these layers can be made by using
conventional earth moving machinery including scrappers, dozers and trenchers etc.

The sides of excavation in soil shall be sloped at 1.5 :1 (1.5 Horizontal = 1 vertical) to the
required foundation depth. After reaching the designed foundation level and before placing the
foundation, it is recommended that the soil should be well compacted by using a vibratory
roller or equivalent.

Geotechnical Investigation: 60MTPD Chlorine & Alkaline Expansion Plant & 150MTPD Calcium Chloride Plant in Riyadh
Page No.: 18
* For all types of fill (Site Development fill, structural fill, general fill.) only one type of
material should be incorporated for practical consideration. further commercial
nomenclature of fill material should be indicated in addition to technical specifications.
Also recommendation may include suitability of using excavated soil out of existing
overburden as fill material.

8.3 FILL MATERIALS

The fill intended to raise the ground to site development level and support the structural
foundations of floors must comprise only the “select materials”.

The materials must be granular and non-plastic meeting the gradation requirements as
described for Groups A-l-a or A-l-b according to ASTM D-3282 classification system. The
Plasticity Index (P.I.) of these materials is limited to 6%. All structural fill should be placed
in layers (loose lift not exceeding 25cm) and each layer compacted to dry density not less than
95% of the dry density as determined through Modified Compaction Test (ASTM D 1557).

The above recommendations are valid for both site development fill and structural fill. For
general filling, any type of material free of organic material, vegetation and debris are
considered satisfactory. The “general fill” material can be used in backfilling above
foundation level outside building area.

8.4 PLACEMENT AND COMPACTION

All general/structural fill materials must be placed in layers not exceeding 25cm in loose state.
In case of structural fill, the compacted density must not less than 95% determined on the
basis of Modified Proctor Compaction Tests (ASTM D 1557), while in case of general fill a
compacted density of 90% of modified compaction test is considered satisfactory. Moisture
content of the fill material shall range between ± 2% of optimum moisture content (OMC) as
determined using modified proctor test.

Geotechnical Investigation: 60MTPD Chlorine & Alkaline Expansion Plant & 150MTPD Calcium Chloride Plant in Riyadh
Page No.: 19
9.0 SOIL CORROSIVITY

9.1 PROTECTION OF CONCRETE AGAINST CORROSION

The requirement may be revisited in light of chloride content of 0.248% & sulphate
content of 0.357% in concluding recommendation.
The chemical tests performed on the soil samples indicate relatively significant chloride and
sulphate content as per CIRIA guide for concrete construction in the gulf region. The
following ranges of specifications are recommended:
Also specify Minimum grade of concrete for foundations

Cement Content (kg/m3) : 350

Water Cement Ratio : maximum of 0.42
Minimum cover (mm) : 50
Cement type : Ordinary Portland Cement (Type I) with microsillica

At least two layers of bituminous coating should also be applied to the exterior of all the
foundations.

9.2 PROTECTION OF UTILITIES

It is necessary that all the utility lines (water, sewage, oil pipe lines and cables etc.) should be
protected against corrosion due to presence of deleterious salts in the soil materials used for
backfilling of utility trenches. Such protection specifically required for certain underground
utilities the specifications of the manufacturer of such utility should be followed.

Remedial Measures against corrosion may be included in the recommendation.

Geotechnical Investigation: 60MTPD Chlorine & Alkaline Expansion Plant & 150MTPD Calcium Chloride Plant in Riyadh
Page No.: 20
10.0 DRAINAGE PROVISIONS

A well planned drainage network should be designed for the site to take care of (i) rainfall, (ii)
runoff water, (iii) irrigation water, (iv) sewage, etc.

The drainage system should be capable of disposing safely waters from all sources without
causing any adverse effects to structures and/or foundation soils.

While preparing the site for the proposed construction, a suitable drainage network should be
planned so as to remove the water from rains and from the other sources effectively away
from the main structures. This should be continuously and effectively taken to a pre-planned
zone so as to discharge into the design outlets in the area.

Geotechnical Investigation: 60MTPD Chlorine & Alkaline Expansion Plant & 150MTPD Calcium Chloride Plant in Riyadh
Page No.: 21
11.0 PAVEMENT

In areas where pavements are to be constructed on natural ground or in cut/fill, the subgrade
must be properly prepared by stripping loose top soil and debris. The stripped surface should
be compacted to a minimum of 95% density as determined from modified compaction test
ASTM D-1557.

The fill materials for sub-grade used in construction of pavements should be less than 3 inches
(75mm in size) reasonably well graded and contain minimum practicable amount of fines. All
the fills must be compacted in layer, (loose lift not exceeding 25cm) and should be compacted
to a minimum of 95% of maximum density as obtained from modified compaction test. A
CBR value of 10% shall be used in the design of pavement.
