CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

The stress is the physical and mental response of the

body to demands made upon it. It is the result of our
reaction to outside events, not necessarily the events
themselves. Stress is the body’s natural response to
challenges. When a student experiences high levels of stress
or chronic stress, regardless of her age or grade, it can
interfere with her ability to learn, memorize, and earn good
grades -- as well as lead to poor physical, emotional and
mental health. By learning about common stressors, a parent
can help to mitigate negative or chronic stress in a child’s
life.

As of today, many people are experiencing stress. Not

just the students but also the people who already
working, specially when the of class. Stress or having
difficulties is a big problem in many students. Stress on the
students have a lot of causes that may lead to a serious
effects.

The academic requirements may cause students stress at

different times of year as they complete large projects or
encounter unfamiliar content that takes longer for the student
to master. School includes multiple factors beyond the
academics that cause stress, sometimes even debilitating
stress for individual students, that parents and educators
should consider when working with students of all ages.

1
The study was conducted to determine the common
causes of stress.

Objectives of the Study

1. To identify what stress level of the students they have

2. To determine the common causes of stress
3. To know how the students deal with stress

Statement of the Problem

The study was conducted to determine the common causes of

stress and its effects among CMBT students. Specifically, it
sought to answer the following:

1. How may the respondents be described in terms of their

age, gender and health status?
2. What are the common stress experienced by the
respondents?
3. What are the actions taken to cope their stress?

Significance of the Study

The findings of the study maybe beneficial to the following

To the school administrator -them to know the kind of support

that shall be given to the students and for the teachers in
handling the situation

To the classroom teachers –for them to have more specific and

clearer view of common causes of stress that will guide them
in looking for appropriate solution to address resolution

To the parents – For them to be effective partners of the

school

2
To the students – For them to better understand their
psychological stress and physical difficulties and be able to
be a productive and model students.

Definition of Terms

Stress- a state of mental or emotional strain or tension

resulting from adverse of very demanding circumtances.

Debilitating- making someonevery weak and infirm

Mitigate – make less severe, serious,or painful

CHAPTER II

Review of Related Literature

Foreign Literature and Studies

College student, specially freshmen, are a group

particularly prone to stress (D’zurilla & Sheedy, 1991) due to
the transitional nature of college life (Towbes & Cohen,
1996). They must adjust to being away from home for the first
time, maintain a high level of academic achievement, and
adjust to a new social environment. College students,
regardless of year in school, often deal with pressures
related to finding a job or a potential life partner. These
stressors do not cause anxiety or tension by themselves.
Instead, stress results from the interaction between stressors
and the individual’s perception and reaction to those
stressors (romano, 1992). The amount of stress experienced may
be influenced by the individual’s abiity to effectively cope
woth stressful events and situations (D’Zurilla & Sheedy,
1991). If stress is not dealt with effectively, feelings of
loneliness and nervousness, as well as sleeplessness and
excessive worrying may result (Wright, 1967). It is important
that stress intervention programs be designed to address
stress of college students. However, in order to design an
effective intervention, the stressors specific to college
students must be determined (Wright, 1967).

According to Ross, Neibling and Heckert (1999), there

are several explanations for increased and stress levels in

4
college students.First, students have to make significant
adjustment to college life. Second, because of the pressure of
studies, there is strain placed on interpersonal
relationships. Third, housing arrangements and changes in
lifestyle contribute to stress experienced by college
students. In addition, students in college experience stress
related to academic requirements. Studies have investigated
the relationship between coping resources and various outcomes
among general samples of youth; no research has focused on
adolecents who reported high personal standards in comparison
to their peers. Research in this area is important considering
that such youth often report high stress when attempting to
meet their personal standadrs, particularly as these standards
pertain to their academic environment.

Local Literature and Studies

Blona(2005) claims that students experience stress since

some are trying to cope with the demands of adaptimg to a new
living environment, new peers, academic pressure, and sexual
concerns. Being in college also put financial stress on the
studens and their families . These situations can leave them
with trembling hands, tense muscles migraine, headache, and
mutiple other symtoms of stress performance or reduce the
student to ineffectiveness.

Duque (2007) cited common effects of stress. These are

insommia, headaches, backaches, constipation, diarrhea, high
blood pressure, heart disease, depression and alcohol, tobacco

5
or drug use. He suggested doing the following: 1) After seeing
the doctor, share your treatment plan with people close to
you. Talk with friends and relatives and explain what you are
going through; 2) If your doctor prescribed medication take it
exactly the way it is prescribed. Do not stop taking your
medication until your doctor tells you to stop doing so; 3)
keep ll follow-up appoinments with your doctor; 4) Remember
that it may take some time to start feeling better; 5) If you
experience side effects from any medication, tell your doctor;
and 6) Seek professional counseling. If your methods of coping
stress are not contributing to your greater emotional and
physical health, it is time to find healthier ones. There are
many healthy ways to manage and cope with stress, but they all
require change. You can either change the situation or change
your reaction. When deciding which option to choose, it is
helpful to think of the four A’s: avoid, alter, adapt, or
accept. Since everyone has unique response to stress, there is
no “one size fits all” solution to managing it. No single
method works for everyone or in every situation, so experiment
with deffierent techniques and strategies. Focus on what makes
you feel calm and in control.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY AND PROCEDURES

This chapter focuses on the duscussion on research method

uses by the researchers conducting the survey including
research local respondents of the study ,data gathering
procedures and the statistical treatment that were used o
answer the specific problem in thos research.

Scope and Limitation

The focal point of this research was to survey the

perception of the selected College of Management and Business
Technology students regarding the common causes of their
stress.

Its primary concentration is bounded only to the selected

CMBT students of NEUST academic year 2018-2019. The survey
respondents consisted of fifty first year students who
experienced stress.

Research Design

This research used the descriptive method to determine

the common causes of stress among CMBT students. A descriptive
method is a type of research that attempts to describe the
status of the study’s focus. Common techniques are
questionnaires,interviews,narrative surveys,case studies and
correlatio atudies(Thomas et al.,2010). These methods helped
the researchers to determine the common causes of stress among
CMBT students.

Research Method

Educational research employs a number of tools or

techniques in data collection. In this investigation, the data

7
will be obtained by using the questionnaire checklist as the
main gathering instrument for attaining the goal of this
study.

Data Analysis

This study uses quantitative type of research. It is used

to gain an understanding of underlying reasons, opinions, and
motivations. It provides insights into the problem and helps
to develop ideas or hypotheses for potential quantitative
research.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK ON CAUSES OF STRESS

 Social relationship

 Time Management

Figure 1.1 Conceptual framework on Common Causes of stresss

COMMON CAUSES OF STRESS AMONG CMBT STUDENT

The conceptual framework on common causes of stress is showed

in Figure 1.1. The detailed study is done in further context.

1. ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

The stress caused due to academic performance tensions is one

of the most common causes of stress in college student’s life.
You join college for learning and gaining knowledge.

8
Practically the course work of college student is very much
challenging and demanding. This stage of education is the
toughest one and individual needs to work hard give his/her
fullest effort here. In college level, the studies become very
highly difficult and simultaneously the competition is also
very high. In this competitive world, an individual need to
maintain good grades and CGPA till the end of completion of
the degree. Students who want to pursue post graduation need
to fulfill all necessities required for getting admission into
a good college. Similarly, students who join and continue
their career need to prepare for the same. In this way,
individual need to concentrate and maintain his/her academic
performance for good future and life. So, by maintaining all
of these situations and concentrating on each causes academic
performances tress.

2. FINANCE

It has become more familiar with the fact that the education
has become so much expensive. Mainly the college education is
touching heights in economical side. So we conclude here that
college feel is expensive. Not all parents can afford paying
college fees. But those parents who can’t afford but are
willing to admit their child in college anyhow manage to pay
his/her fees. They sacrifice their other needs in front of
their child’s career and also for their wants and needs. This
is also one of the stress causes in individual’s life.
Individual is familiar with this fact and this thing may hunt
individual’s mind causing stress.

On other hand, there can be many other ways of causing

stress due to financial problems. If individuals not happy
with his monthly pocket money or is unable to satisfy his/her
own needs or is getting embarrassed in front of friends due to

9
no money or continuous sacrifice due to shortage of money or
losing money in any situation can causes financial stress.

3. SOCIAL RELATIONSHIPS:

Student find many relationships in college. The relationships

may be of friendship or love. In early stage of college,
individual may find difficult to cope up and trust and find
true friends. Due to this, few may get stressed and depressed.
On the other hand, individual faces many ups and downs in love
relationship too. This causes stress. Fights with partner or
friend or any other issue with your close one or with one
college gives you stress. Also , individual get introduced to
new people, they become friend and relation continues.
Maintaining relation with these people can also cause stress.

4. TIME MANAGEMENT

Time management also pay an effective role as stressor. Most

of times, the college students feel lazy and thus they keep on
postponing their tasks and other works. While completing the
work at the end, an individual feels the stress of doing the
entire task together. Here stress is caused due to not
managing time in any of the situations faced by a college
student in day to day life.
