STAGE I
EMPATHIZE

On March 18, 2019, Ms. Karen Cruz decided to tell us that we need to make a research
that is called design thinking which have 5 parts, and the 1st part is Empathize. All groups was
given 4 topics that we could choose; the topics are Globalization, Climate Change, Politics
and governance and lastly is the ICT which stands for Information Communication
technology. Ms. Karen gave us a time for us to talk about what kind of topic were going to
choose. The first thing we did is we list down all the possible issues in that 4 topics that we
are interested in and very timely right now. In globalization we discussed the Population
Growth, inflation rate, Immigration, Overseas Filipino Workers and Transportation. In
Climate Change we discussed the political dynasty, changing the qualifications for the senate,
poverty and corruption and justice system in the Philippines and lastly in the ICT we discussed
the identity theft, privacy, cyberbullying, and internet addiction. Fist is we talked about the
pros and cons of it and how it is very timely right now. The topic that we chose is the global
warming, global warming is one of the most serious our environment and human race is facing
today since the 21st century and sea levels are uncontrollably rising in alarming rates. A lot of
trouble can be brought by this, however, the solution in order to stop or minimize global
warming can be done by each one of us.

STAGE II
DEFINE

In this stage, our group defines the problem with the use of cause and effect. The topic
that we chose was the climate change and under that was the flashfloods. And from there we
wanted to know how can we prevent flashfloods. Our group first discussed the topic then we
list down cause and effect to further understand the topic. Each one of us gave a cause and
effect from there brained storm what would be our goals.

CAUSE EFFECT
 Illegal logging  Damage of property
 Improper waste disposal  Lost of human life
 Lack of discipline  Lost of livelihood
 Determination of health condition

courses.
 Seminars about the impact of
flashflood
 Proper waste disposal

STAGE III
IDEATE

Before discussing the ways to prevent flashfloods we talked about the causes and effects
again, because we can't think of a better way to prevent it if we don't know what's the cause
and what will be the effect of it. After discussing the problems we talked one by one of what
are we going to do to prevent the flashfloods. The ways to prevent the flashfloods are tree
planting because as we can see when trees are being cutted the people are not planting trees
exchange for the one they cutted, the second one was proper disposal of garbages, helping to
clear the clogged areas, and clean up the clogged drainage. We interviewed people and asked
them how can they prevent flashfloods, they told us that we can prevent it by proper
segregation of waste materials, planting more trees, refrain from using plastic wares because
it may cause cloging of drainage and educate others not to ruin plants because plants helps us
prevent flash floods and helps freshen air. The implementation we thought of are a program
for tree planting, have more education campaigns starting from the purok and barangay levels
to empower the residents and the community to manage their waste and garbage more
conscientiously.

STAGE IV
PROTOTYPING

It was hard to proceed with the solutions so we searched the internet for
materials that can help us with our topic. We had a problem thinking of topics that we will
include in our seminar and what will be the name of it. The focus of our seminar we will give
included "planting trees"
We started with creating titles for our seminars. After brainstorming and looking for materials,
the titles we agreed on were:
For Everyone - “Tree Planting: Each One, Teach One, How to Plant One”
“Segregation: the Future of the Nation”

We felt that these topics will help us answer our question in Stage II "How can we prevent
flashfloods?"

______________________________________________________________________________ 02
The next step was we talked of what will be included in the program and the materials we will
be using.

Tree Planting: Each One, Teach One, How to Plant One

The trees are one of the reasons behind the life on the earth. There are various benefits of the
trees including protecting us from the various natural calamities. There are various proofs
which show that planting more and more trees can protect us from flooding, global warming
and other life threatening natural calamities. Planting more trees around rivers could reduce
the height of flooding in towns by up to 20%, new research suggests.

Here are the objectives we seek to achieve:

Improve outdoor recreational activities
To restore native forests around village to protect water supplies.
To reduce carbon dioxide, a principal greenhouse gas that contribute to global warming.
To increase oxygen level in environment.

Participants: Everyone
Materials: PowerPoint presentation, Seeds, Soil, Tools for planting
Duration: 8:00 am to 12:00 pm (240 minutes)

“Segregation: the Future of the Nation”

The United Nations on Tuesday, the World Environment Day, warned that every year
more than 400 million tons of plastic waste is produced in the world, of which only 9 percent
is recycled. According to the report, that was released in India - which is hosting this year's
event - 79 percent of waste generated from plastic accumulates in landfills or in the
environment, while only 9 percent is recycled and 12 percent is incinerated. "If current
consumption patterns and waste management practices continue, then by 2050 there will be
around 12 billion tons of plastic litter in landfills and the environment," said the report. The
report also pointed out that 13 million of plastic waste is thrown into the oceans every year

Here are the objectives we seek to achieve:

Improve outdoor recreational activities
Improved public health.
To reduced vulnerability to climate-related events.

Participants: Everyone
Materials: PowerPoint presentation.
Duration: 8:00 am to 12:00 pm (240 minutes)

The slides of the Powerpoint presentation used can be found in the Appendix section.

STAGE V
TESTING

The final stage of the design thinking process is the testing stage. This stage is where
we tests and tries out the best possible solutions from the previous stage. Based from our
group’s discussion and researches, these are the solutions we thought of:

 Seminars for tree planting

 Seminars for proper segregation

The said solutions were tested in the different institutions we are affiliated. The Laguna
State Polytechnic University - Sta. Cruz Campus’ Senior High School Students had a seminar
entitled “Segregation: For The Nation; which tackles the proper waste management. The
students who attended were provided lectures and examples of proper waste management.

Random citizens of Paete, Laguna were given a seminar for the tree planting entitled “Tree
Planting: Each One, Teach One, How to Plant One; which tackles the benefits of tree planting
and they were taught how to plant trees.

After each seminar, feedbacks and suggestions were asked from the participants. Below
are the evaluations of the different participants:

Students

Comments and Feedbacks

 The presentation was detailed and informative
 The lecture was clear and understandable
 The topic is interesting and relevant
 The desired message were addressed and we were able to reflect on our actions

Suggestions
 Provide more activities
 Give infographic materials next time
 Give more timely informations

Citizens

Comments and Feedbacks

 Topic were explained well and very detailed
 Presentation was easily understandable
 Real life situations were given

Suggestions
 Conduct more seminars like this so that more citizens will learn
 Include more activities so that it would become more interactive
 Overall, the participants, from the citizens and students gave a positive review and
feedback on our prototype of the best possible solutions. The topics we wanted to
address were easily understood of the participants. There are some flaws, all the

recommendations, suggestions and comments of the participants will be taken into
consideration in the future to create more viable solutions to the problem.

Stage VI
IMPLEMENTATION
The last stage is the implementation. In this final stage, the researcher test the product
using the best solutions identified during the prototyping phase.

After the validation and applying the changes that were suggested, the researcher then
proceeded with the Seminar and Tree Planting. In the seminar we used a power point
presentation. In the tree planting we climbed tatlong krus together with our volunteers.

The discussion went smoothly for the students were actively participating. Almost
everyone was listening in the discussion, most of them. There were still a few students who
didn’t listen. This is why the researcher find this a problem. There are students who are did
not want to learn. It was explained to them that the purpose of seminar was to inform and for
them to be aware. The students agreed that it was. It helped them to be informed and be aware
of proper segregation and it would be better if they can apply it in their daily life.

The tree planting was a success thanks for the volunteers who helped us made this tree
planting happen. The volunteers was actively participating in the tree planting. Few kinds in
the surrounding wanted to join us so we have let them join, he more the merrier. We can see
the enjoyment and the care for the nature in every one. The volunteers agreed that it was a
very helpful project and they just hope that the trees will grow.
FINALIZATION
In this chapter, the researcher carefully observed the implementation process for
further improvement. The researcher observed and recommend the following:
Seminar: Proper Segregation
1. Make sure that the presentation that was used was informative and based on facts.
2. Make modules and out puts regarding the topic.
Tree Planting
1. Make sure that the things that was used is complete.
2. Make proper schedule.

This has been successfully implemented and finished thanks to the guidance of our
teacher , Ma’am Karen Cruz, and the support and the participation of the students and
volunteers.
