OFFiCE OF THE ASSISTANT SECRETARY OF DEFENSE

WASH!NGTON.D.C. 20301-1600

Pusuc art-alas August 29, 1985

Ms. Angela Greenfield

New Phoenix Productions, Inc.
1H875 N.E. 20th Avenue
N. Miami, FL 33181

Dear Ms. Greenfield:

This is in reference to our telephone conversation today.

Enclosed
is a copy of the reasons the Army gave for denying the request originally
forwarded by Mr. David Tumanoff. The Army, as you will note, doubts
revisions that
would make the script “Good Morning Vietnam" acceptable.

Please see the enclosed Department of Defense (DOD)

policies,
especially Instruction 5fl10.15, page 3.

In our opinion, items of the Army comments b, c,

and f could be
toned down considerably without much difficulty.
Items d, e and g scald
be changed, deleted or perhaps overcome by adding
scenes showing cor-
rective action being taken; also characterizations
might be changed, too.
'owever, the implausibility and overall effect
would require close
lonsultation with the Army in rewriting which
probably would be a total
one. That version then would require being
reviewed. Presently we
cannot say the script can be approved if such
and such is changed or
deleted.

I suggest the enclosure be studied and perhaps discussed

with Ms. Pat Grossman in the Army Office of Public disag§;,i_'
Affairs. ""‘7 ' '
The Army and ourselves are not asking to change or
'
that are known to have taken place and allowances are
ha .33
situations but they must be within the realm of platelet};
factuality. A more balanced and positive accumnulatige
V
necessary to warrant favorable consideration. (rf'A

SUBJECT: Motion Picture Script. “Good Morning Vietnam“

fie have reviewed subject script and offer the following

comments on it:

a. The basic premise of the story is implausible. The

unauthorized activation of a 50G team would not have been
tolerated by MACV. and any such effort to activate it would
have been swiftly stopped.

b. The script abounds to the point or nausea in

gratuitous blood. violence and go

c. There is excessive and. again. gratuitous foul

language.

. The pot smoking and use or other drugs by soldiers on

duty would not have been tolerated by the col-ender and other
members of the ECG teal.

COMMENTS ON MOTION PICTURE SCRIPT "GOOD MORNING VIETNAM“
1. On Page 2 and continuing throughout the script. reference
is made to "Armed Forces Radio Network”. “AFRIN” and "AFRN".
The correct terms are I'J’unued Forces Vietnam Network“ and
"AFVN".

2. Page 2: "CNN“ does not mean Central Control North. It

means Command and Control North.

3. Page 2 and throughout the script. erroneously rerers to

“609" as meaning flpeoiol Operations Group. It stands for
Studies and Observations Group.

4. Page 3 - 10: The description and dialogue on these pages

inaccurately imply that 50G teams were composed of members or
all Services. They were composed only of Army personnel.
The erroneous impression is also given that SOS did not
perform prisoner recovery operations on a continuous and
organized basis. It do so under MRCV's Joint Personnel
Recovery Center. That center. which was a division or 506.
coordinated all rescue missions.

5. Page 12: Reference is made inaccurately to ARVN as the

Army or the Republic of North Vietnam. ARVN stands for Army
or the Republic of Vietnam.

6. Page 12: Reference is made to “two ARVN rangers attached

to the sec team.“ The ARVN did not provide rangers to see.

7. Page 20: LRRPs were normally conducted by LRRP teams

assigned to larger units. not by son teams

3. Pages 27 — 23: The atrocity involving the ejection or an

enemy prisoner from a helicopter in order to make a second a
talk replays an old stereotype or American conduct in Vietnam
which is not justified by the facts. '
