Read the text below and complete the following tasks.

What purposes should a school fulfil? Some sort of systematic training and instruction should be
offered, with a view to enabling pupils to pass specific examinations, so they will be qualified to
continue their education at other institutions, or to start their professional lives straight away. … (1) It
should encourage the pupils to develop their own abilities to the full and become social beings, able to
get on with other people and work out problems in a civilized manner.
One theory is that in an ideal school children would be able to choose which lessons they want to
attend. … (2) Some people, however, claim that children, if left to their own choices, will simply play
all day. … (3) Others say that the children of some experimental schools show the opposite; after a
short time children become bored with playing all day, and their natural curiosity leads them to attend
lessons voluntarily. …(4)
