“Julia Louis-Dreyfus Acts Out”

1. To what opportunity for change is the writer responding?

-The writer may be responding to the change of point of view on life and its many hardships. The

profile looks at how Julia battled breast cancer while still working hard and staying positive

instead of giving up.

2. Who might be the writer’s intended audience?

-The writer’s intended audience may be individuals who are interested in film, wanting to know

how Julia made it to the top and what struggles she went through getting there.

3. What might be the writer’s purpose?

-The writer’s purpose may be to show how strong Julia is, and how many individuals can learn

from her. The writer accomplished this by displaying the difficulties that Julia faced.

4. What information did you receive from the introduction?

-The details in the introduction give information of Julia Louis-Dreyfus. You learn that Julia is

actually nervous to receive the Mark Twain Prize of American Humor and to give a speech. The

introduction informs the audience that she holds the most Emmys for one actor, and also that she

has been going through many treatments for breast cancer.

5. What facts and details did the writer provide in order to create a vivid picture of the

subject?

-The writer provides details about Julia’s characteristics such as her hair, saying that it is

“explosively curly” but also “blasted by chemotherapy.”

6. What past experiences or current activities and actions does the writer point out to make

the subject compelling to you?

-The writer points out Julia’s experience battling breast cancer which brings in pathos and makes

the audience feel compassion towards her. In addition, Julia’s effort with the many shows she

has been a part of was provided.

“A Movie Star With a ‘Weird Relationship With Confidence’”

1. How did the author use ethos, pathos, and logos in the profile? Record the title and one

technique the writer used for profile writing.

-The author uses ethos by being knowledgeable about the films Joel Edgerton has been a part of

and also the other actors involved. Pathos is used as the author describes how Edgerton was

denied by his own father because of Edgerton’s life choices. Finally, the author uses logos by

getting other individual’s opinions that know Joel Edgerton, and then connecting it with the

author’s views. One technique that the writer used for profile writing was capturing Edgerton’s

personality. This was not only from describing Edgerton’s childhood and experiences, but also

from using dialog from Edgerton and the people that knew him.
