Terminology 3.1 Definitions —For definitions of terms used in this test Inethod. refer to Terminology C125 4. Summary of Test Method 4.1 This test is a measure of degradation of mineral ues of standard gradinus resulting from ‘actions including abrasion or attrition, impact, and grinding in {rotating steel drum containing a specified number of steel spheres, the number depending upon the grading of the test sample. As the drum rotates. a shelf plate picks up the sample and the steel spheres, carrying them around until they are ‘icopped to the opposite side of the drum, creating an impact crushing effect, The contents shen roll within the drum with an abrading ane grinding actien unui the shelf plate picks up the sample and the stecl spheres, and the cyele is repeated. After the prescribed number of revolutions, the contents are remow from the drum and the aggregate portion is sieved 19 measure the de; aggre combination of dation as percent loss nificance and Use 5.1 This test has been widely used as an indicator of the relative qualily or comipetenve of various sources of aggregate having sin The results do not ‘automatically permit valid comparisons to be made between sources distinelly different in origin, composition, or stmctu ‘Assign specification limits with extreme care in Consideration of available aggregate types and their performance bistory in specific end uses, lar anineral compositions. 6. Apparatus 6.1 Los Angeles Machine—A Los Angeles machine, con forming in all essential characteristics to the design shown in Pig. L, shall be used. The machine shall consist of a hollow steel cylinder, with a wall thickness of not less than 12.4 min, (Note 2) closed at both ends, conforming to the dimensions shown in Fig. 1, having an inside diameter of 711 © S mm QS: © twa 079 033 Ay 131-06 fo mame Gg --semer e Bonga, a Inch Equlvaents FIG, 1 Los Angeles Testing Machine © 0.2 in,), and an inside length of $08 * 5 mun (20 * 0.2 in), The interior surface of the cylinder shall be free from protri- sions disrupting the path of dhe saraple and steel splezes except for the shelf described below. The cylinder shall be mounted on siub shafts attached to the ends of the cyliaider bat not entering it, and shall be mounted! in such a manner that i rotates with the axis in a horizontal position within a tolerance in slope of Tin 100, An opening in the cylinder shall be provided for th inoduction of the test sample. A suitable, dust-tight cover shall be provided for the opening with means for bolting the cover in place. The cover shall be so designed as to mainta ‘contour of the interior surface unless the shelf is the charge will not fall on the cover, or come in contact with it during the test. A removable steel shelf extending the full length of the cylinder and projecting inwasd 89 + 2 mm (3.5 * 0.1 in.) shall be mounted on the interior oplindrical surface of the cylinder, in such a way that a plane ‘centered between the Inrge faces coincides with aa axial plane. ‘The shelf shall be of such thickness and so mounted, by bolts ‘rother suitable means, as tobe firm and rigid. The position of the shelf (Note 3) shall be such that the sample and the steel spheres shall not impact on or near the opening and its cover, 89 and that the distance from the shelf to the opening, measured along the outside circumference of the cylinder ia the direction of rotation, shall be not less than 1270 ram (50 in,), Inspect the shelf periodically to determine that i€ is not bent either lengthwise or from its normal radial position with respect tothe cylinder. If either condition is found, repair or replace the shelf before further tests are conducted. Nore 2—This i the minimum tolerance permited on 12.7 mm (V4 im) rolled steel plate as described in Specification A 6/A 6M, [Nore 3The use ofa self of wear resistant steel, rectangela in cross section and mounted independeatly ofthe cover, is prefered. However a Shelf consisting of a section of tlled angle, properly mouuted on the Inside ofthe cover plate may be used provided the direction of oaton Suc that the charge wil be caught on the ouside face ofthe angle 6.1.1 The machine shall be so driven and so counterbal: anced as to maintain a substantially uniform peripheral speed (Note 4). If an angle is used as the shelf, the direction of rotation shall be such that the charge is caught on the outside surface of the angle. [Nore 4—Back-tah or slip inthe driving mechanism is very key © fumish test reste Which are not duplicated by other tix Angeles ‘machines producing constant peripheral speed. a Aly 131 - 06 TABLE 1 Gradings of Test Semples ass neo SS Sow Bae Saar OFS ana fn) tance a os copiers OT ooinmit Sonn Oain) aomm tr) Taam tein) 2500 = 10 resmm ohn) some 25q0 2 10 weno tuin) ecam('in} aso 10 Sommcent open te. 3500 2 10 Soeinm Ne. bab Ne 8 500 10 sot $000 = 18 5000 10 0 19 5000 210 462 Sieves, conforming to Specification F 1! 6 auancec-A balance or Seale accurate within 011% of test Toad over the range required for this tet Soa onge-Tbe charge shall consist of see! spheres ping appronomately 46,8 mm (17 in) in eset ‘and each paving a mass of between 390 and 435 B. vine ae charge, (Nowe 3) depending Upon We grading of sa aioe at deseribed in Section B sal be 2 Follows onsen ‘Spheres Charge. sre 5st tal Renings 460 am hein) a ATS Ten) sen ria mwas of appoxiaately 00 and 4 Be eres As mun «1%: 8) i i petty are readily avait Ste sept 2 uso appoint 120g may ase fe ame Eonar hese ses conten 1 ME aS Toleraners of 6 and 6.41 7, Sampling, 7.1 Obkain the field sample in 1D J5, and reduce the field sample 10 3 nvcovdance with Practice C702, scordance with, Practice equate sample size i 8. ‘Test Sample Preparation ry aah the seed sample and oven Oy at 110 $$ °c (050 29 7F) to substatially constant mass oD, separate into individval size fractions, ane recombine to the seeing of Table 1 most nearly comesponding the range of are Ge aggregate 25 furisbed for the OVE Record the ee i de sample prior f0 test to the nearest | 9, Procedure Fr ace te test sample and the charge in the Los ANEISS cecing machine and gotte dhe machine #2 speed of 3 ior 30 revolution (ote Ate he reseed TET TE alotons, discharge the material from the machine and seas tetiminary separation of the sample nacre than hg 70m (Ne, 1) See Sieve the Finer portion oo & 1. 70-nit sieve te Forming to Test Method C 136. aarp material coarser than the 1TO-mam (NO. 17) and Wa pnd 32 230 = 9 ED to susan) oe oy Lt), and determine the mass to the nearest 1g (Note 7) 1: tthe aggregate is essentially free of adherent coating andthe requirement for wessing after the tet 8 GO an en de case of referee testing the wasting prosedure shall be performed. ore 6 Nace nfrsintion concen he nor of ee ae eae by Dering he os afer 0D sven a de dcermined by dy sieving He material on he P70 08 Fe washing, The rato ofthe Ys after 100 revuations sete wie oveons sould net geal exces 020 cr Me of to aes mae When the deteiston is made, ke are ai af the sap etr be ete sample, ng tein 2) ar een machine fore al AOD evens rege! ounplete the tes epee Toniation of washing. fer test will selfom ies OF Faas nr more ha tut 0:25 of he eign sample mass 10, Calculation 10.1 Catculate the loss (fference between the original nage and the final mass of the test same reentaye of the original mass of the test sample, Report ths valve 28 ue | percent loss (Note $). | oe The perce st termined hs tet etn i ne | a Ie Fein he pcan Toss forthe same aa we | tented hy Test Metxd C935, | 11, Report !
