Summary of the GADSS Concept

The High Level of Safety in aviation results

from lessons learnt after accidents

The tragedies of AF447 and MH370 have

highlighted the necessity to quickly identify
and localize an A/C in distress.

The ICAO has developed the GADSS

concept (Global Aeronautical Distress and
Safety System) applicable to commercial air
transport operations, addressing:
• Aircraft Position
• A timely recovery of flight data
• A better Search and Rescue coordination
Summary of the GADSS Concept

The GADSS consists of following components :

• A/C tracking AT
• Autonomous Distress tracking ADT
• Post Flight Localization and Recovery PFLR

GADSS Information Management and

Procedures will not be addressed in this
webinar

Summary of the GADSS Concept

AIRBUS Vision
• Full, compliant, implementation of A/C Systems enabling ICAO GADSS on board.
• Compliance with existing EASA Rules, including CVR 25 Hrs.
• Strong participation in Regulation and standardization groups (ICAO, ARINC, EASA, …)

Tracking ADT PFLR

Benefits
• Retrofit impact very limited (Low Frequency Beacon, 90 Days ULBs, minimum ATSU Standard).
• Compact solution (ADFR includes the ADT).
• Robust solution based on existing COSPAS-SARSAT satellite payloads.
• Combined, Deployable recorder for an improved dispatch reliability.
• Fleet commonality
Summary of the GADSS Concept

Airline role
• Check relevant regulation with
NAA
• Make sure that all concerned A/C are
fitted with the right technologies
• Perform the tracking of A/C
Refer to ICAO ANNEX 6.
• Manage the Alerts generated by the
tracking system Use for guidance the ICAO Doc 10054:
• Establish the procedures supporting Manual on Location of Aircraft in Distress and
GADSS Flight Recorder data Recovery.

AOC Application
Normal Operations • Position Report: already included in the standard Database
Tracking capability • The AOC messages can be customized
• Transmission rate customized to the minute
• Message contents can be customized example with: FOB, Mach
• Note message format will depend on the AOC Supplier

• Option available in Collins Aerospace (ex Rockwell Collins) and Honeywell

AOC application
Abnormal Operations • Position Report sent every minute:
Tracking capability • Implements triggering rules based on avionics parameters retrieved by AOC
• Airbus defined and validated the abnormal triggers.
• Through customization AOC database managed directly with Collins Aerospace

Autonomous Distress Tracking

Capability to detect a distress and transmit

information allowing to determine the
position of an aircraft at least once every
minute:
• Provides 3D Position
• Activates within 5 seconds upon distress
detection
• Gives accident site determination with a
6NM radius
• Uses protected distress spectrum
• Is resilient to faults of A/C power,
communication and navigation
• Sends signal to Search and Rescue

Note: “Distress is a situation which, if left uncorrected, is likely to result in an accident”.

Tracking ADT PFLR

Autonomous Distress Tracking

• ADT is being standardized by ARINC GAT Working Group (OEMs, suppliers,

operators), based on ICAO requirements
• Suggested implementation options: ELT-DT (Distress Tracking), ADS-B based,
Inmarsat based, Iridium based
• Airbus ADT solution is ELT-DT based, either integrated in Deployable Recorder
or standalone
