1. Find the magnetic field intensity applied to a magnetic circuit of mean path length 50 cm
when a coil of 400 turns is applied to it carrying a current of 1.2 A.

2. A current of 2.5A when flowing through a coil produces an mmf of 675 At. Calculate the
number of turns on the coil.
[Ans: 270 turns]

3. A coil of 300 turns is wound uniformly on a ring of non-magnetic material. The ring has a
mean circumference of 40cm and a uniform cross-sectional area of 4cm2. If the current in
the coil is 5A, calculate (a) magnetic field intensity, (b) the flux density and (c) the total
magnetic flux in the ring.
A totally non-magnetic material has a relative magnetic permeability of 1.

4. Calculate the reluctance, ℜ for a magnetic circuit where the magnetomotive force (mmf), F
is 8.9 At and the flux of the circuit (ɸ) is 0.24 Wb.
[Ans: ℜ = 37.08 At/Wb]

5. Calculate the amount of magnetic flux, ɸ in a piece of iron with reluctance, ℜ of 55 At/Wb
and an applied mmf, F of 2.2 amp-turns.
[Ans: ɸ = 40 mWb]

6. A ferromagnetic core with the depth of the core is 5 cm. The other dimensions of the core
are shown in the figure.
a) Find the value of the current that will produce a flux of 0.005 Wb. With this current,
what is the flux density at the top of the core?
b) What is the flux density at the right side of the core?
Assume that the relative permeability of the core is 1000.

7. A ferromagnetic core with a relative permeability of 2000. The dimensions are as shown in
the figure with the depth of the core is 7 cm. The air gaps on the left and right sides of the
core are 0.07 and 0.05 cm, respectively. Besause of fringing effects, the effective area of the
air gaps is 5 percent larger than their physical size. If there are 400 turns in the coil wrapped
around the center leg of the core and if the current in the coil is 1.0A, what is the flux in each
of the left, center and right legs of the core? What is the flux density in each air gap?

8. A two-legged core is shown in figure below. The winding on the left leg of the core (N1) has
400 turns and the winding on the right (N2) has 300 turns. The coils are wound in the
directions shown in the figure, If the dimensions are as shown, then what flux would be
produced by currents, i1 = 0.5A and i2 =0.75A? Assume µr =1000 and constant.

9. The magnetic circuit shown above has dimension Ac = Ag = 9cm2, lg = 0.05 cm, lc = 30
cm, and N =500 turns. Assume the value µr = 70,000 for core material. (a) find the
reluctances c and g. For the condition that the magnetic circuit is operating with
Bc = 1.0T, find; (b) the flux ɸ and (c) current i.

10. For the magnetic circuit in below, N =400 turns, Mean core length, lc = 50cm

Relative permeability of core, µr = 3000 and i = 1.0 A
Find; (a) Flux in the core and flux density in the air gap
(b) Inductance of the coil

11. The coil has 250 turns and is wound on a silicon sheet steel. The inner and outer
radius are 20 and 25cm, respectively, and the toroidal core has a circular cross
section. For a coil of 2.5A, find
(a) The magnetic flux density at the mean radius of the toroid.
(b) The inductance of the coil, assuming that the flux density within the core and
equal to that at the mean radius.

[Ans: H=442.1 At/m where B = 1.225T, L = 0.2406 H]

12. An iron ring has a cross-sectional area of 400mm2 and a mean diameter of 25cm. It is
wound with 500 turns. If the value of relative permeability is 250, find the total flux
set up in the ring. The coil resistance 474 and the supply voltage is 240V.

[Ans: ɸ = 40.48 x 10-6 Wb]

13. The toroidal (circular cross section) core has shown as below. It made from cast steel.
a) Calculate the coil current required to produce a core flux density of 1.2 Tesla at mean
radius of the toroid
b) What is the core flux, in webers? Assume uniform flux density in the core.
c) If a 2 mm wide air gap is made in the toroid (across A-A'), determine the new coil current
required to maintain a core flux density of 1.2 Tesla.

[Ans: i = 2.515A, ɸ=1.508 x 10-3Wb, inew = 12.06A]
