ASSIGNMENT#02

Q#01: What is International Computer Driving License (ICDL). Review the contents of

ICDL. How is this course “Introduction to Information & Communication

Technology” related in conjunction to ICDL?

ICDL (International Computer Driving Licence) is the world's leading computer skills certification.

Purpose: Defining the skills and competencies necessary to use a computer and
common computer applications.

ICDL Base modules certify skills that are considered essential skills because they are crucial for
anyone who uses a computer to possess.

ICDL is some how related to information technology because it certify a user on his computer
skills which are ultimately related to IT or computing.

Q#02: What are the key differences between a Notebook and an Ultrabook?

Notebook

A notebook is a portable computer which has a processing power similar to a desktop

computer. It weighs around 5kgs and has batteries capable of running it for 4 to 5 hours
without any external power source (assuming the battery is fully charged). They have a
screen size of greater than 15 inches and support high resolution displays. The mouse
is replaced by a touchpad keeping in mind the portability factor. Some touchpads also
support multi-touch gestures (for zoom, rotation, scroll, etc.).

Notebooks allow most features that a normal desktop offers. It usually comes with built-
in multiple USB ports and contains a CD drive (including DVD and Blu-Ray disk
read/write capability). Some laptops also have a VGA slot to connect an external display
or even a projector. Nowadays, notebooks are also capable of processing high-end
graphics and are suitable for gaming. Notebooks are also easily customizable now as
internal peripherals are easily available in the market. Notebooks also offer features like
Bluetooth and Wi-Fi support. Since all the features of desktop are offered within a
notebook with the additional form factor of portability, notebooks are generally priced at
a higher range than desktops.

Ultrabook

Recently, a new series of laptops known as Ultrabooks has been released. The term
was first defined by Intel. Later on, other manufacturers also started manufacturing
similar devices under the same name. An Ultrabook is a thin, lightweight and portable
device with the processing power of a notebook. They are designed to provide benefits
of both notebooks and netbooks at the cost of a higher price. Ultrabooks feature Solid
State Drives (SSDs) for faster disk operations, greater persistence and better
performance.

Q#07 Describe in detail the difference between a virus, worm, trojan horse and root kit?

VIRUS

A computer virus is a type of malware that propagates by inserting a copy of

itself into and becoming part of another program. It spreads from one computer to

another, leaving infections as it travels. Viruses can range in severity from causing

mildly annoying effects to damaging data or software and causing denial-of-service

(DoS)

WORM

Computer worms are similar to viruses in that they replicate functional copies of

themselves and can cause the same type of damage. In contrast to viruses, which

require the spreading of an infected host file, worms are standalone software and do

not require a host program or human help to propagate. To spread, worms either exploit
a vulnerability on the target system or use some kind of social engineering to

trick users into executing them. A worm enters a computer through a vulnerability in

the system and takes advantage of file-transport or information-transport features on

the system

TROJAN HORSE

Trojan is another type of malware named after the wooden horse that the Greeks

used to infiltrate Troy. It is a harmful piece of software that looks legitimate. Users

are typically tricked into loading and executing it on their systems. After it is

activated, it can achieve any number of attacks on the host, from irritating the user

(popping up windows or changing desktops) to damaging the host (deleting files,

stealing data, or activating and spreading other malware, such as viruses). Trojans

are also known to create backdoors to give malicious users access to the system

spread through user interaction

ROOT KIT

is a collection of computer software, typically malicious, designed to

enable access to a computer or an area of its software that is not otherwise allowed

(for example, to an unauthorized user) and often masks its existence or the

existence of other software.

Q#08. Compare three apps that can back up photos from your smartphone to the cloud.
Which one would you choose and why?

Dropbox (Free, with premium plans)

If your primary concern centers around documents, photos, and media files rather than
a backup of your contacts, SMS, and other phone details, then you may already be well
served by cloud storage services like Dropbox. The cloud storage pioneer offers cloud-
based, multi-device-synced storage for everything from documents to photos and other
important files, with automatic backups and 2GB of online storage (expandable through
promotions or premium plans). Premium subscribers get extra perks, such as more
storage, file versioning features, and encryption. You won't be backing up things like
app installers or app data, but Dropbox is a great solution for simple cloud backups of
your documents.

Google Photos (Free)

Sometimes, you're not looking to backup everything on your phone. If your main
concern is backing up your photos, then one of the best options out there is the Google
Photos service. Users can store an unlimited number high quality cloud-synced photos
in their Google account, as well as up to 15GB of original resolution photos in your
Google Drive space. In addition to the generous storage terms, Google Photos features
a smart search tool for finding familiar objects, places and occasions, and smart album
assistant and basic photo editing tools. Users shooting for one of the brand new Pixel
smartphones also get the added bonus of unlimited cloud storage for videos and
original resolution images.

My Backup Pro ( price for premium version $3.99)

My Backup is a reliable app backup and management tool for Android devices. My
Backup provides app backup functions, with automated scheduling, cloud backups and
more. While My Backup works well on non-rooted phones, the true potential of the app
is unlocked when you run it on a rooted phone, allowing it to back up not just apps, but
also app data and settings such as saved games, market links and more. A free 30-day
trial version lets you demo the app.

WHICH ONE TO CHOOSE AND WHY?

I’ll definitely ask you to go for GOOGLE photos, the prime reason behind this is; Google
is a well know company and it respects user’s privacy unlike other apps which ask you
for access to everything that even is not useful.
Another obvious reason is it’s free :D so choosing GOOGLE PHOTOS is better as
compare to other above mentioned apps.
