Objective

▪ Students will be able to identify diverse elements from the text


through an initial group and later, partner exchange with 95%
accuracy.

Procedure

1. Introduce: Announce the children’s book Rainbow of Friends by P. K.


Hallinan. Then ask students to form a large group circle on the floor, and
encourage students to sit next to someone they are not close to.
2. Read: Teacher will read the book aloud, making sure to show students the
illustrations along with each page.
3. Discuss: On the board, teacher will post five questions for the students to
think about. In a group discussion students will raise their hand to tell
everyone what they think about the question and give their answer. Teacher
will allow up to five minutes of talk for each question.
o Question 1: How would you describe a rainbow of friends?
o Question 2: What is this books’ theme?
o Question 3: What does acceptance mean to you?
o Question 4: How do the illustrations tie into the books theme?
o Question 5: Would you describe your friends as a “Rainbow of
Friends?”

4. Activity:

o Students will receive a white sheet of paper with a rainbow stencil on


it. Teacher will ask students to get into pairs with five different
people. Students’ goal is to find one similarity and one difference that
they share with their partner.
o On paper student will write similarities in the clouds of the rainbow
and differences on the base of it.
o Students are to include fun fact about what they love about themselves
as an individual and who they are in pot of gold.
Materials Needed

▪ Sheet with rainbow stencil


▪ Markers, scissors

Evaluation

Teacher checks for completed assignment and looks for creative work that
contributes to the expressing of diversity among peers.
